^^^ Christopher did mention searches Sogood, seems the old data needs re indexing with the new SW installed, it's only about 180,000 individual posts IIRC.

Glad the speed issue seems to be sorted, the new server must go to one of "those" doctors.
I wouldn't mind more choices in colours if possible. The new messaging is 10/10.

I've posted this in a few other places, but it doesn't hurt to spread it around:

Until the search function is working (and even after, if you're like me) try using a Google Search with the format "let there be light site:bicycles.net.au", where "let there be light" is what you're searching for. (This works on all web sites and is one of the best things in Google searches!)

I never use the search function in forums because it usually only searches the forum you're in at the time. Google searches the whole web site with that domain name.

Cheers,
Graeme

Greame - advanced search?
however google does a great job of indexing the site and making it easier for others to find the cool topics.

Currently rebuilding the search index - it really is taking hours.

Colours look good!

However... I would personally prefer the user ID / avatar / info on the left. Studies on user interaction demonstrate that people tend to look at webpages looking down the left side of the page and then across. Certainly, I seem to find it more difficulty to instantly grasp who the author of a post is with that section on the right.

Anyway, just my thoughts.

Regards.

Yes it is all possible - just a matter of working out how and when to do it.

My thoughts are to collect feedback - create a priority list.
For topics with differing opinions - get votes.
For the look and feel I will see about loading other themse so that each member can individually select a theme (in their preferences) in which they prefer.

Just a note - the forums as you see are what you would call a standard installation - so there was not a specific decision to have certain colours or layout - but lets see about how we can update the forum and make it feel more like home.

Cheers

G'day

Has it been re-indexed yet? If not, then that is the explanation. There is a separate thread on this topic.

Just want to say I'm loving the speed of the new forum, thanks Christopher! Right now it's the fastest it's ever been for me. Would have to agree WRT the theme/colours (IIRC from way back when I had a PHPBB2 board it's not that hard to add new themes) and I'm also not a fan of avatar on the right. But who cares, it's fast :D

Ok, the database has been re-indexed and the search function is now working again. I like the fact that it now displays the actual post rather than the thread the post is in.

Requesting that the maximum horizontal pixels for the avatar be doubled so that TLL can fit the front half of his horse

Even if this suggestion is not implemented, any chance of increasing the allowable filesize from the current 9kB to 20kB (or so)?

Hi,

I did 9 hours worth of indexing - before I had to then packup - so it was not finished and the search index is therefor only partly accessible.
I will try again and let it run... see what happens - if we have any luck.

Regarding avatar size - no way - not increasing the size. a page of 25 posts each with a 20kb avatar - absolutely crazy!

--

regarding the design... yep - I will collect and take all suggestions onboard for consideration.

I agree. Small avatar is the go and keep page loading efficient. For fancy pictures, there are photo hosting sites that one can link to.

What a briefing for a job? work? A paid job?... woohoo.
Great - what will you pay and what colours do you like best :)

Sorry but I thought the whole idea behind using an off the shelf board such as phpBB was the fact that someone else had already done all the work and put it out there to share around?

I do like the new layout, more modern etc. I do have one bugbear though, and others may or may not agree.

When browsing forums, i am finding it really hard to quickly identify threads and thread titles. I am finding that the thread title itself is too close in colour and size to the author and date stamp under it. Like the thread title should be slightly bolder and the author/datestamp maybe a point or 2 smaller in font size and maybe a colour slightly softer than the thread title. There is just so much going on now (new post icons view unread first post icon, thread title, author, stamp) and the colours of each alternating thread backgrounds are very close, that when scanning the thread for new titles or familiar threads, its just harder to do.

Anyways, thats my suggestion/rant, its not bad at all, but I think it needs slightly better hierarchy.

Partly true - though someone still had to install, add, change etc etc etc.
What I am doing is getting feedback and making sure there is a general consensus for changes, then based on the priority/importance will make the changes.

rocketeer, yes, I agree - it seems like more of a jumble and I will see what options there are to improve this.

Cheers

Uploading pics to the forum?

I've noticed it's no longer possible to "attach" a pic to a thread. The only option is to post a link to a hosted pic... Is it just me? or is that intentional??
