I see it every time... What does it actually signify?
I'm sure it's written somewhere, but I have no idea of where to go looking for it?

If you log in there is a checkbox option to 'hide' that you are logged in so this wouldn't appear. For active and fast discussions, when you spot that a user is online then you may anticipate a quicker reaction.
