Sorry for asking such a simple question, but ...
Does a SRAM Red 10-speed cassette talk amicably with an Ultegra 6700 set-up or does SRAM have to talk to SRAM and Shimano like to talk only to Shimano?

The only SRAM & Shimano bits that must be brand-matched are rear derailleurs & shifters - the rest all talk nicely to each other.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

To clarify: the above means you need a derailleur matching your shifter, eg shimano-shimano. The cable pull at the shifter is different between SRAM and shimano, as is the derailleur movement between brands. The cassette spacing, however, is identical between shimano and SRAM. A smart move on SRAM's part, rather than creating a 3rd standard.
Just to make it more confusing, SRAM road shifter cable pull is near identical to campagnolo, meaning you can run SRAM shifters on your campag groupsrt or vice versa.
