DuraAce 7900 C24 clinchers

Postby jzr » Thu Jan 10, 2013 7:42 am

I know these have been discussed recently as the 9000s are now floating around at reasonable prices BUT...does anybody know if these are now well and truly done?

I can't find any available online anywhere right now (for a reasonable price! i.e sub $1000 - some AU LBSs with online stores are up over 1000 still) apart from the odd random place selling a single wheel and only one (front or rear) not both which ends up being more expensive buying from separate stores as opposed to the wheelset from one place.

Have seen CE's deal on the 9000s but the graphics don't appeal to me as much as the 7900s

And yes, to save the inevitable, I have heard of/seen/read reviews of the Pro-Lite Braccianos and I don't want them at this stage.

Shimano seem very keen for 9000 to work. The Australian rep does not even have spares for 7900 and don't seem to wsntvyou to bring any in

I saw some 7850 C24s somewhere online the other day, I'll have to do some searching to find them again.

You're a few days too late. Merlin just went out of stock of 7900 c24's. They had them in stock as recently as Tuesday.

I have a pair under my desk waiting for my bike mechanic friend to return from his holiday.

To answer your question I believe they are now out of production. There are a few around but apart from Merlin, they are being sold at "tell him he's dreamin" prices.

I went through the same thing around Christmas. Merlin were the last mob doing a decent deal. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Thanks for the replies.

I've ended up going the RS80 C24s instead as there seem to plenty around still. Exact same wheel as the DuraAce (effectively the Ultegra version), just a slightly heavier/different hub. Plus I run Ultegra so these at least 'match'

From what I hear the RS80's aren't much different - same rim, different hub, different decals. I think maybe the freehub is tougher on the DA but that might be my imagination.

If anyone else is playing along - I just accidentally discovered that Cycle Sports UK has the 7900 c24 in for $384 (front) and $435 (rear), so a few hairs over $800 with free shipping. They're the tubeless compatible version though.

Not the cheapest price I've seen but these wheels are discontinued now, so if you aren't going to change up to 11spd and want a decent set of all-purpose/climbing wheels, get in quick.

FWIW I swapped my old Aksiums out on Friday and did 120km on them on Sunday. Really, really nice wheels. Chalk and cheese compared with the Aksiums.

Yes DuraAce free wheel bodies are made of Ti... Which is a very nice touch compared to soft alloy bodies.

As I'm in the process of replacing my free hub, I NOW understand why Ti would be a good thing! Mine was badly chopped out, to the point where the top few sprockets moved backwards and forwards several mm.

True but all the other Shimano wheels use steel freehub bodies which is actually stronger than titanium just heavier.

I couldn't be bothered searching to see what others are made of...good they are all steel.

Its a non-issue regardless of freehub material if you do the cassette lockring to the manufacturer's recommended torque.

It's still a poor choice of material for longevity.

I've got a couple of self inflicted nicks on the hub body of my Reynolds and no problems at all.
