Ultegra 6700 VS 6800

Postby auswi2 » Fri Jan 03, 2014 6:39 pm

I have a Merida Scultura 905-E DI2

I want to change some non Ultegra parts over

I have a FSA Mega 50/34 Compact Crank
Merida Pro Brake Callipers
FSA Bottom Bracket
Tiagra 11/28 Cassette.

Can I use a Ultegra 6700 or 6800 Compact Crank
Can i also use a Ultegra 6700 or 6800 Brake Calipers
Will have to use a 6700 10 speed rear cassette

Either Ultegra crank will work, even though the 6800 is labelled "11-speed only". Cranks are not as fussy as other driveline parts when it comes to mixing different gear sets. You will probably also need a Shimano bottom bracket to match (does not specifically need to be the same group level, all road-spec. press-fit and external-bearing screw-in units are compatible).

Either brakeset will work (6800 better due to revised leverage points in the calipers).

Any Shimano or SRAM 10-sp. cassette will work.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Nothing is wrong with your FSA Crankset unless you want to see Ultegra name on it.

If that is my bike, I'll only replace the Merida Brake Calipers with Ultegra 6800 Calipers. This you can feel the difference.

I'll wear the chain, the cassette, and the chainset before replacing them with Ultegra. But this would mean thousands of km of riding before you can complete your bike with full Ultegra parts.

Use your money to buy descent water bottle, lights, shoes, jerseys, saddle, or pedals. If you are racing, buy some good wheels.

Just my 2c by the way.

I wouldn't even bother changing the brake calipers. The Merida made items while a bit naff colourwise work really well and the FSA crank is pretty decent and also a whisker lighter than the Ultegra offering.

First things I got were better wheels and tyres. I'm also going to change the BB for a Dura Ace BB when it gets tired. The original saddle was awful for my derriere too and got changed after the first 100km.
