Dura Ace 7900 - whats your honest opinion.

Postby dfa7559 » Thu Mar 27, 2014 5:02 am

Hi all!

Im looking to upgrade from Ultegra 6700 to DA7900. I have read good and bad things about the DA7900(there is a post about it here somewhere).

Whats your honest opinion of the Dura Ace? I want to change to shave some weight, and get better shifting. I figure its not the top dog of groupsets for no reason, right?

7800 was 1000% better....
I couldn't wait to get 7900 off my bike... No endless amount of tinkering could get it right...

Do u have internal cable routing? If external u will be ok... If internal it could cause issues... 7900 doesn't handle friction well offered by internal cable routing...

SRAM red copes much better...

Honestly... you are going to shave a 100 or so grams off the whole bike and that's about it... doubt you will notice any other differences apart from the bike looking a bit better, unless you have done 30,000kms on your Ultegra 6700 that is.

I'm with TLL... I found 6700 on another bike very good... Externally routed... Except for minimal weight saving, u won't notice much diff... Keep your money and save for a secondhand 7970 or 6770 or newer Di2...

I have DA7800 on one CAAD and Ult6700 on the other. I find the DA7800 shifts a smidgen smother, but both work exceptionally well. It ALL comes down to set-up, maintenance and condition of cables, etc.

I would not consider an upgrade from Ult6700 to DA7900 to be worthwhile, unless you had to replace a worn/broken part.

7900 is good, but it's not earth-shatteringly astounding, unlike both 7800 & 9000. There's no particularly noteworthy improvement over 6700 that makes it a "must have" or worthwhile upgrade.

However, there is minimal interchangeability between 10- & 11-sp. stuff, so if you're going to upgrade that way you must commit to it in one hit, rather than doing little bits here & there.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

I have 6600 on my commuter and 7900 on my racer and I can't tell the difference. It all works perfectly.
