Ultegra 6870 11-28 vs 11-32 cassette experience

Postby Drizt » Thu May 21, 2015 10:32 pm

I have the medium (gs) cage on my commuter and I was toying with the idea of trying out the 11-32 cassette. The only time I've wished for a lower gear that 34-28 is when I failed to complete the south side of Mt Macedon.

Is it a waste to get the 11-32 if I only end up using the 32 on the rare occasion? Would I notice the bigger jumps between gears?

+1.

The gaps will only be different on the last two sprockets. The 25/26 will be replaced by a 27/28 and the 28 will be replaced by the 32.

At that end of the cassette your looking for an easier gear, not a smoother jump. The other bonus is that you can stay in the dog ring for longer when riding rolling hills. A 53 x 27 does make pinchy rolling hills easier to maintain speed where I live.

You've already answered your own question. You need a lower gear, get it.
The only big jump is 28-32 the rest of the cassette is exactly the same as the 10s sram 28-11 I run. Great cassette.:)

look like the 11-28 will be a good option for Fitz's for me. Currently have the 11-25 with the 52/36 cranks. Looks like it just swaps the 16 for the 28. My 10sp has an 11-28 already, but has a 53/39 crank, so I am only slightly off even with the 11-25, but it is nice to have that bailout gear!

Guess I'll find out. Just stocked up on items and included an 11-32t cassette to try out.

Nuance of sprocket / Gearing:
11-12-13-14-15-17-19-21-23-25-28
11-12-13-14-16-18-20-22-25-28-32

It will be interesting to see if I notice much of a difference... obviously will on > 10% long climbs but from day to day ....

I did the Fitz Extreme a couple of years ago with a 53-39 on the front and a 12-30 on the rear. It was bearable but I think a 12-32 would have been nice for the Honeysuckle climb with 150km in the legs.

I's have to change out the RD as well for that, which I am not overly keen on. I'm looking at the Fitz's Epic, but might have to do a weekend rec ride of the climbs to see how the gearing is.

I went from 5700 105 with 10s 11-28 to 5800 105 with 11s 11-28. Pretty much the same difference ignoring the bailout. I thought I noticed the smaller gaps. Not so sure now though, and think most of it was easier smoother changes with the new series.

i run an 11-28, the only time i've ever wanted more was for the meg on 3 peaks, then the back of falls, during 3 peaks.

maybe that last stretch of hotham as well, during 3 peaks.

in conclusion, if i were to do 3 peaks again I think i would splash out and go the 32

I did Fitz Hill for the first time early this year with a 11-28. I wouldn't do it again without a 11-32.

I dont think the climb itself is so bad and easily double with a 39x27. It's just where it's located that makes you want to back off knowing you still have to get back to base.

3 peaks is my goal for 2016. I currently run 52/36 with 11-28. I have a 50/34 in a box for 3 peaks ready to go. Am hoping 34/28 will be sufficient for me

Given your recent effort up Cootha I think you'll be fine.

Hi guys

I run 6870 Ultegra with 11-28/34-50. If I want to change to 11-32 cassette what are all the parts needed to be changed?

My understanding is a new (longer) chain, and a "bigger" RD and thats it right?

You can get away with a standard derailleur under a 32T, but it can come down to whether your frame's chainstays are just the right length to get the right balance of chain length and tension. A longer cage is preferable just to ensure that sufficient chain is carried, so yes, that and a longer chain are all that would need to be changed.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Thx Duck.

Do you need to buy the 11-32 cassette as a full unit or is it possible to just replace the 28 with the 32 cog individually?

biggest 3 cogs on my 6800 cassette are permanently attached to each other.

The days of individual sprockets from the big component manufacturers went the way of the dodo after 7 speed.

After spending some time with the 11-32 (coming from 11-28) I have found the following:

- You do notice the jumps between gears more but I haven't found it to be a problem.
- I haven't really needed to use the 32 much (if at all). I used it up an 11% just to see what it was like and it was very easy, stayed seated.
- I now find I spend move of my time in the big chain ring. Because I'm 1 cog higher than previously I don't get to the cross chaining point very often. Basically use the small chain ring for taking off or very steep hills.

Now just need to give South Side of Macedon another go.

FWIW, having done Fitz's Epic and 3 peaks in recent years, and hoping to do them again soon:

- A 39x28 is good enough for most things on those rides.
- I do definitely notice the shift up to, the what is it 24 tooth cog? ... it always feels like a 12.
- I miss the 16. Not on the small ring, but the big ring. 53x16 is a key gear especially going hard on the flat.
- For me, the 39x28 is just OK for Honeysuckle after 115 km, and fine for the Meg and the rest of Hotham at about 90 km, but not OK for Back of Falls after 200km. For myself, I won't change over to the compact for Fitz's but I will for 3 Peaks.
- Only thing to consider, if you get a wet day, where you risk wheelspin out of the saddle on steep uphills, and you need to stay seated, a bailout gear would be highly desirable. Pushing a slightly too high gear on dead legs is tough, and carries a high risk of cramp.

I'll make sure I have 32 rear gear on my next Fitz challenge. I did the last one with 39/25 and it hurts, definitely hurts :D
