6770 di2 replacement options

Postby dampier » Tue Dec 01, 2015 1:35 pm

Hi,

My Ultegra 6770 di2 rear derailleur packed up last week and I am unable to find a replacement (out of production). I think that I read somewhere that Shimano will be releasing a replacement next year but they are not reliable with dates and volume (dfly comes to mind).

I was looking at getting a new bike mid next year when the disc brakes have been sorted out(for wet weather).

So I am looking at basic bike to cover the next six months. Looked at the Reid Falco http://www.reidcycles.com.au/falco-adva ... -bike.html and replace the wheels with my current set.
Any ideas or is there a work around for the RD or any other basic bike, looking for 105 or 10 spd rear cassette.

Thanks

Darren

what makes you sure the RD is faulty? other than presumably it is not shifting

Assuming you can replace your freehub with an 11sp freehub then the upgrade to 11sp only requires FD, RD, 11sp cassette, 11sp freehub and chain. Your 6770 shifters will work with 11sp derrs and your rings will be good enough. That would be my route and then when you want to go to discs next year you could just buy the shimano di2 disc brake + shifter units and transfer the rest of the group over to a new frameset.

I think you need to change the control unit and maybe junction box too

yeah, i'm not 100% on the compatibility now that i think about it. probably best to refer to carlton:

http://carltonbale.com/shimano-di2-ever ... d-to-know/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Every electronic component is compatible between the Ultegra 6770, 6870, and Dura-Ace 9070 systems. This means that all of the road bike Ultegra/Dura-Ace dual control brake levers/shifts, time trial shifters, and climbing shifters can be used with either Ultegra 6770/6870 or Dura-Ace 9070 front and rear derailleurs. Any of the Ultegra/Dura-Ace controllers (A Junctions) can be used with either system. All components use the same cables and connectors.

Note 1 – Sprint Shifter Exception: The Sprint Shifter is the only exception for shifter incompatibility. It has a different wiring connector (and internal components) that can only plug into a unique/dedicated third port on the Dura-Ace ST-9070 Dual Control Brake Levers/Shifters and also the ST-6870 Levers. There is no sprint shifter port on the ST-R785 Hydraulic Levers.

Note 2 – Can’t mix 10-speed/11-speed front/rear Derailleurs: It is no longer possible to use a 10-speed front derailleur with an 11-speed rear derailleur (and 11-speed front with 10-speed rear.) See note farther below to read the history on this.

Note 3 – Front A junction and Internal Battery: Since the February 2015 firmware update, the older SM-EW67-A-E Front Junction A is no longer compatible with the BTR2 Internal Battery. The SM-EW90 Front Junction (with integrated charging port) should be used instead. The SM-EW67 still works with the external battery.

Note 4 – Update the Firmware to make components compatible: If the firmware on all components is not updated to the latest version, some components may be not operate correctly with one another. So download the latest E-tube software and update everything and it should work.

Note 5 – All Shifters work with 10-speed and 11-speed Rear Derailleurs: All of the shifters are compatible with either the 10-speed Ultegra 6770 or 11-speed Ultegra 6870/Dura-Ace 9070 systems with no reprogramming required. The rear derailleur is the only component that “knows” or “cares” how many rear gears are available. The shifters only send upshift/downshift commands and do not “know” or “care” which gear is currently selected and how many total gears there are.

Note 6 – SM-BTR1 External Battery and SM-BMR1 Mount firmware updates: The more expensive dedicate service tool (SM-PCE1 PC Interface) must be used to upgrade the firmware on the external battery/mount.The external battery and battery mount can not receive firmware upgrades via the SM-EW90 Front Junction A and the SM-BCR2 PC Interface/Battery Charger. (The SM-EW90 will work in a system with an external battery, but a firmware update can cause them to become incompatible until both are updated independently using the appropriate PC Interface and the Shimano ETube software.)

Jules, it is definitely the RD. It is unable to shift up from the lowest gear, just makes a few clicking and whirring sounds.

I am not looking at replacing the di2 system as the cost will be the around same as a low end bike, which I will use for the 5 - 10 km trips.

No. Only the derailleurs are 10 or 11-sp-specific. Everything else is cross-compatible. The junction/control box is more to do with battery type selected; EW90 has the charging port for the internal battery, EW67 does not. There is nothing stopping you using EW90 with the external battery, but you can't charge that battery through it, only with the separate charger.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Possibly in another one of my posts on the subject...... :wink:

Yes Shimano are introducing a new 10-sp. Di2 RD, apparently as a variant within the 6870 series, and slated for release early next year. Any more than that, I do not know.

going off topic I know, but is there any way you can elaborate on that (as the statement confuses me)?

RD-6870 is 11-sp. At present there is no 10-sp. derailleur available since the discontinuation of the 6770 series. Shimano are introducing a new 10-sp. Di2 RD, which I gather from the small amount of information I've received from Shimano will outwardly resemble 6870 (i.e. current model), but have its own model identity code. What that will be, and when we will see it, I do not know.

Duck - would be interesting if it was 10/11 compatible. wouldn't take much to do.

For the original poster... I think if you have early firmware for your 6770 system, you can just upgrade the RD to 6870 and leave the rest of the DI2 system as is and it will work. Later firmware upgrades prevent this working (later firmware requires FD and RD to match). Of course if you got the 11 speed RD, you have to upgrade your wheel/cassette to 11 speed.

I have never upgraded firmware on any part of the Di2 on my bike. My bike is a 2012 vintage Di2 bike, and the original owner upgraded to multishift in 2013. When I got it I made the following changes:

* 6870 FD and RD
* Internal battery

I just plugged these in and it all worked with no firmware updates. I made an adapter cable that enabled me to charge the internal battery via the spare shifter port so I run internal battery with the EW67 junction. It all works great, and I am resistant to upgrade any firmware unless there is a reason to do so as Shimano have developed a habit of preventing old valid setups from working on latest software variants.

It's fairly probable that newer 6870 RDs will have the firmware updates that will not talk to a 6770 FD.

I second this. I did around 10 x Di2 10 to 11 speed in the last 3 months and I have tried and tested the 6870 RD with 6770 FD before putting it in the upgrade build. All of their firmware are now updated :(

I'm sure some smart fella has worked out how to downgrade/roll back firmware on 6870 RDs...

This. Tried a mix and match at one stage, it wouldn't have a bar of it until both der's were the same spec 67xx or 68xx.

Still works out a pretty cheap 11sp system upgrade, even if your forced into a 6870 FD... I can't believe some of the online prices for 6870 FD & RDs!
