Upgrade to 9070 Di2 or wait 6-8 months for 9150 Di2 (double the cost)

Postby readyfe » Tue Aug 23, 2016 9:37 am

Hi All,

Currently running mechanical Dura Ace 11 speed and am wondering if there is any benefit in waiting another 6-8 months for the newer Shimano Dura Ace 9150 Di2 ?

I've found some good deals on the 9070 Di2 groupset/upgrade kits and I guess its the question of is it worth nearly double the cost and also time to wait for the newer model.

I'm a weekend rider with some weeknight rides, approx 250km per week.

Thanks (I've been hesitant posting this question too as not sure how this will be received). :?

Where did you find those deals for 9070 Di2? I'd like to upgrade my TT bike with Dura Ace Di2 (just the RD, FD, chain and cassette). It has really old 10spd Ultegra Di2... All my other bikes are 11 spd...

Personally I wouldn't bother upgrading, mechanical Dura Ace 9000 is beautiful as it is, at least as good as Di2 provided you've tuned it properly.

Depends how desperate you are for the Synchro shifting function; that's the only real trick R9150 has over 9070. Shimano have allegedly been trialling an update to enable Synchro on existing groups, but when or even if it will be released is unknown.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

I wish I could upgrade to DA full stop.

Let alone from DA Mech to DA Di2

Whatever you get is good.

I had a look at the prices of the Di2 components - good grief they are expensive for Dura Ace Di2.

The scary part is the 9100/9150 Di2 will be double...

Thanks for the replies too, I've read up about which components need upgrading to support the synchronized shifting, so apart from the normal improvements (whether marketing or real) for my needs I'm still below the limits of the current generation.

What did you find out about what needs to be upgraded from 9070 to get synchronized shifting (and where did you find it). Oh and I think most of us (not all) ride bikes that are way better than our limits are - but they are sooooo nice to ride.

Synchro needs at the very least both derailleurs and compatible junction box. Some functions also require the new internal battery or external battery mount, but I can't remember right now if Synchro is one of them....

3 Bits required (from my reading)

- Internal Battery BT-DN110 (replaces current SM-BTR2)

- Wireless Unit EW-WU111 in-line design, (replaces the D-Fly SM-EWW01)

- Junction Port EW-RS910, (2 port) (Internal frame or handlebar end - this will allows junction box to be kept internal?)

I'll update more I find out.

The voice of reason here. You don't NEED Di2 DA... if you wanted DI2, you could almost swap DA9000 for 6870 UDi2.

So. If you can afford to upgrade from mechanical, then just do it. If you can't afford it, then don't. Do not under any circumstance believe you are saving money - you are only buying the old tech and that's the only reason its cheaper than next year's model. If you can't justify the extra for syncro shift, then don't get it.

Me? I'm getting a power meter equipped Shimano Di2 group when it comes out next year. I don't care how much they are charging. It really doesn't matter... if I couldn't afford it, I'd stick with my UDi2. Or just get 105... great quality groupsets are available right down the food chain, it just comes down to your budget. If you can't justify paying 2500-3000 bucks for a groupset, then don't spend the money. But you aren't being a wise shopper buying any model of Di2. Its damn expensive. I'm just too lazy to deal with stretched gear cables anymore...

That's why I went Dura Ace mechanical with my road bikes, it's pretty decent value if you already have some of the components and it works beautifully.

It'd be tempting to just go 6870 Di2 instead. I think I saw like over a $1000 just for 9070 Di2 for just derailleurs, and not even factoring a cassette. That's insane.

Interesting line in the Shimano link:
Shimano Synchronized Shift will be available for all previous 11-speed Di2 road component groups with the use of new Di2 firmware and accessories in November 2016.
That wasn't there when the new stuff was launched, and updates from what the Shimano guy said at the launch I went to.

The Wireless Unit (D-Fly thing) is NOT required for Synchro shifting; as wih the current unit, the D-Fly transmits Di2 battery charge and gear position information to compatible bike computer (Garmin, Magellan, etc) displays, the trick with the new one, when paired with the new battery or mount, is that is can connect via Bluetooth to the E-Tube software for wireless updating & reprogramming.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.
