Postby Krank » Sun Oct 02, 2016 2:04 pm
Can i still use the 2006 10 speed campag centaur short cage rear mech with the campag 12-30T cassette and 53/39 front rings?
How to test this?

My take would be to err on the safe side and get a medium cage RD although some on that forum claim it works using your RD. If you go with your existing RD install the 12-30 cassette, maybe lengthen the chain if needed and test it on the work stand although out on the road it may be problematic. Don't cross chain either.
I know with a previous Shimano setup I could easily exceed their recommended max tooth size for a 7800 and 7900 RD (going from a 27t to a 30t) because my rear derailleur hanger was long enough to make it work. Other frames may not be so accommodating.

However, I read conflicting data from the different links provided:
Brandfordbikes - "...it is important to understand that any 1999 to 2008, Campagnolo 10 speed rear derailleur, will shift up to a 29 tooth cog and down to an 11 tooth cog. The problem you will run into is that the derailleur cage may not be long enough to take up all the slack in the chain for a wide range. Thus Campagnolo recommends using a short cage derailleur with a maximum cassette cog size of 26 teeth even though it will shift to a 29 tooth cog..."
Campag Spec -
- CAPACITY (TEETH) 32
MAX SPROCKET (TEETH) 30
MIN SPROCKET (TEETH) 11
CHAINRING FRONT DIFFERENCE (TEETH) 16
Brandford Bikes imply no, campag imply yes.
Still unclear on this one...???

Capacity = (large chainring – small chainring) + (large rear cog – small rear cog)
= 53 - 39 + 30 - 11
= 14 + 19
= 33
So - with this chainset, at 32t capacity a short cage actually does have enough for 29t , but not enough for a 30t sprocket.
It's marginal, and a short cage derailleur may very well work, but a medium cage derailleur has a capacity of 37t and is really the one you should use.
And I just remembered I have a barely used medium cage Chorus derailleur sitting in the cupboard. Yours for $75 plus postage.

The cassette is 30-12, so one less cog to consider and a total capacity of 32.
Does this reduced capacity (by 1 x cog) help improve the likelihood of being able to utilise the existing chain set?
Where does Chorus sit in terms of quality of build with Re Ors and Cenraur for the rear mech in 10 speed?
What year is your MC rear mech?

5 second google search... Back in 10 speed time Campagnolo order of groupsets was Record, Chorus and then Centaur.Krank wrote:Where does Chorus sit in terms of quality of build with Record and Centaur for the rear mech in 10 speed?

OK - I missed that your cassette starts with a 12. According to Campy a short cage will work with your setup.Krank wrote:The cassette is 30-12, so one less cog to consider and a total capacity of 32.

After finding my derailleur I realised it has a carbon body and is worth a lot more, so sorry but offer withdrawn.

Feed the chain through both derailleurs and onto the smallest chain ring and sprocket. Take care to feed the chain under the two retainer tabs on the rear derailleur cage.
Then adjust the length so you have around 10mm (a fingertip) clearance between the chain and the rear derailleur cage and cut the chain accordingly.
Remember - if you are going to join the chain with a link you need each end to have an inner link. If you are going to use a pin then you need an inner and an outer link.
Watch the video. Note the red text at about 1:23.
