Fuji Altamira 2.4 - Big sale, good deal?

Postby madclassix » Wed Apr 23, 2014 3:14 pm

Hi all, first post here. Just looking at getting back into riding, mainly to get to work and have a bit of fun on the weekends. I was looking at getting a bike under the $2000 mark but I came across a deal at a local bike shop that has me tempted. Its the Fuji Altamira 2.4. Thing is I can't find anything about the bike online in terms of reviews and the like. Is anyone here familiar with the bike? You can have a look at what it consists of here: http://www.bicyclestore.com.au/fuji-altamira-2-4.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.

The place I'm looking at has it on special for $2299 and it seems like a really good deal but I'm scared of committing myself because of the lack of info online (not even on the fuji website).

Specs:
Frame C5 high-modulus carbon, integrated head tube w/ 1 1/2
Fork FC-440 carbon monocoque w/ tapered carbon steerer & carbon dropout
Front Derailleur SRAM Force, braze-on mount
Rear Derailleur SRAM Force, 10-speed
Shifters SRAM Force DoubleTap, 20-speed
Crankset SRAM Force, 53/39T
Bottom Bracket SRAM Press-fit BB86
Chain KMC X10, 10-speed
Cassette SRAM PG-1070, 11-26T, 10-speed
Saddle Oval R500 w/ CrMo hollow rails
Seatpost Oval 905, carbon 31.6mm x 350mm
Front Brake SRAM Force
Rear Brake SRAM Force
Brake Levers SRAM Force
Handlebar Oval 310 butted 6061 alloy, 31.8mm
Stem Oval 313 3D-forged 6061 alloy, 31.8mm, +/- 7 degrees
Headset FSA Orbit C-40, 1 1/8
Front Wheel Oval W535 aero alloy clincher, 35mm rim - 700c
Rear Wheel Oval W535 aero alloy clincher, 35mm rim - 700c
Tires Hutchinson Equinox II, 60 tpi, 700c x 23mm, folding

Any input much appreciated.

A that price, with those specs, I'd be happy. Compare what model Giant or Merida you'd get for $2300. The only unknown is the wheels, Oval being Fuji's house brand.

the only thing maybe get the chainrings swapped to a compact, with that gearing if you have a lot of hills around the area it is going to hurt, maybe a 50/34 on the front instead.

Crankset SRAM Force, 53/39T
Cassette SRAM PG-1070, 11-26T, 10-speed
Boardman CX pro now the commuter, Salsa Casseroll, Trek Domane

It's not a drop-everything, this-will-never-be-repeated deal. But the specs look good and so too the bike. As above, you'd be better served with a compact crankset fitted, most likely. i.e. you'll enjoy the bike more. A friend of mine has an Altamira and he's very happy with it. Not the same model. I've not ridden it. etc. But yeah, on face value, buying this bike wouldn't be a stupid thing to do ... so long as it is in your size*, and feels good on the test ride.
*essential.

Thank you all for your input. I decided not to go for this one, mainly for superficial reasons (I just didn't really like the look of it), but also because the model is supposedly an Australian only special edition and I wasn't comfortable with the lack of info available.

I think the Fuji was on special because it was last years model with a 10spd SRAM Force groupset which has been superceded by an 11spd version, so today when I found a 2014 Trek Madone 4.7 which has a full 11spd Ultegra groupset and a look I'm much happier with for about $2400 I went for it.

Cheers.

Good one. In any case, it could have been a bit of a bumpy ride on oval wheels. Boom tish.

On a serious note, you'll get much better resale of the Trek, being a known quantity to most bike heads. Not that you should be thinking of this on purchase really, but it is relevant.

i've heard odd things about the altamira - supposedly not a good descending bike. I have the SST. In terms of the AU only edition, that would just be a change to either groupset or wheels. It'd still be the altamira frame.

the madone 4.7 is a great frame. i've ridden one and it's very smooth

Altamitra if iirc has a lower mod carbon weave, around 24k. The SST are slightly better grade - 30k. I have an SST 2.1 myself and its a wonder
