I am pretty pleased with the outcome of my latest build.
'04 specialized alloy MTB frame from junk room at LBS i help in occasionally. Masked and painted by me to rid it of garish MTB transfers. Same on Mosso fork from 'bay.
Shimergo 8 speed ( all shimano down the back - record 10 speed shifter on r/h. L/h shifter gutted as 1 x8).
bb7 road F & R. needed discs as MTB canti lugs in 'wrong' spot. Woulda looked funny disc rear/canti front!
Everything else from my junk pile. 10.2 kg.
Big up to my mate Ben for loaning me the wheels whilst i build mine. And Colin for chainring/disc rack and stem donation. Also peter at International cycles for the donor frame.
Only done 20 km's so far...dialied rear mech and trying to bed in discs. Feelsgoodman.
Will be my commuter/CX race bike for '13 then sold to finance another holiday build.
Deceiving as it is a 19 inch (large) frame MTB. The seat to cranks and seat to bars are almost same dimensions as my 59 x 59 roadie. I'm actually going to a shorter stem (when i find one), probs a 110mm...down from 120.
I woulda loved a jake the snake but this fits the budget.
I've done about 250 km on it now...apart from punctures, happy quiet (shimano stealth) rolling.
I'm v.happy with the Shimergo.

It literally took 10 mins to tune up. Everyone that's ridden it is impressed.
Really only went that way as it's what i had lying around. Also it is impossible to find:

i'm sure this info will be howled down but my main concern was price.....
I made a steel CX/ commuter(1 x7) last year with the same Record ergos/ shimano 126mm rear with a 13-30 MTB cluster/ shimano rsx100 road derailluer/dura ace 9 speed chain, which went well too. In the end went with a single barcon ( thanks elantra) and old shimano aero levers. I was worried about theft at uni mostly.
I read somewhere recently that shimano 10/ergo 11 is a possibility.....Hmmm.
A shorter stem will improve steering response from the relatively slack (for CX) head angle, and will make it easier to handle descents without going OTB

You mentioned a shorter stem was under consideration - I was just agreeing I think it's the right decision. Wasn't criticising your build. Unless you'd like me to

And then you put the Prolly sticker on . Not having a go, i like that sticker but just had a chuckle .

The original MTB had an 80mm travel fork (~450mm crown race to axle) and these are 411mm...about the longest i could find. The steepening of the head tube angle ( 25mm is about a 1 degree head angle change) that would normally give a more twitchy ride seemingly has been negated by the increased rake (?..i never saw the original fork. MTB's usually had an offset forward position for dropouts, but probably not 43mm offset) and trail measurements and been very positive towards handling.
