Cheapo Cross Bike

Postby kelsnotbilt4lycra » Tue Jul 09, 2013 10:45 pm

I've built a cross bike out of an old Trek 7.0 hybrid. It's a little on the heavy side but on the flipside it's really robust. Haven't taken it out in anger yet because the planets haven't really aligned as far as that goes yet but it's a lot of fun to ride anyway.

I've got an alloy stem which I haven't had time to put on yet. I actually changed all the other stuff straight after I took that pic. I'd only just chucked everything on that morning really quickly. Got a set of Easton vista rims and Racing ralphs on now as well. It took me a few rides before I got everything where it was supposed to be :-)

It's turned out better than I thought it would (considering I wasn't really sure what I was doing). I read as much as I could about cyclocross set up etc, but there's still the odd time I'll be riding along and go Äha! So THAT's what they were talking about." Ispend more time riding this than anything else now.

Looks like the go. I've got the basis for something similar using a Giant Cypress frameset I acquired for $30...but since it has the frame clearance to fit 29x2.0 tyres (or 700x50 if you want to be a pedant) then it is getting the single speed monstercross treatment
Ours is not to reason why...merely to point and giggle
