amazing how the australia tax has affected prices. not much has changed in the technology, the actual builds, components, and yet the prices have sky rocketed.

I have seen some Kona - Jake the Snake (2014) on run out at good prices ~$1800.
Anyone have any thoughts or recommendations (alternatives) ?

How would the jake the snake compare to say the Focus Mares AX 1.0 2014 ?
Or would I bet better off buying an older model and saying some coin ? E.G. Focus Mares AX 1.0 20-G 2013
Sorry if these are noob questions.

If it were me I'd go with the Focus, they've had great reviews here in aus. If it's the disc version which I've seen on Bike Ex for around the $2000 mark you couldn't go wrong for the money, great specks. A guy in our group was riding one on the weekend and it looked sweet.

Thanks for the reply. I need to look into the SRAM s700 hydraulic brakes on it. Apparently those were recalled.

Yep recalled, definately worth asking about but I'd hope they'd all been replaced by now. As far as I know there was an o ring that could fail in very low temperatures.

Spoke to them about it and apparently the bikes should be ready in a couple weeks with the replacement hydraulic brakes from SRAM. The whole issue must have been pretty damaging to the SRAM brand. It has taken them a long long time to rectify the problem.

Pretty much set on getting the Focus Mares AX 1.0 (when ready by end of June).
The problem is sizing.
One shop recommended a small and the other a medium *shrugs*
The shop recommending the medium measured my stand over at 83cm. I had a ride of a 2013 model AX in medium and it felt a lot different to my road bike (Giant Defy Advanced 1 - Small) but I'm guess that is a given due to how different the bikes are for their intended purposes. Unfortunately they didn't have a small in store for me to try. They guy was pretty adamant that the medium was the right choice for me.
I'm 173cm without shoes
Apparently my standover is 83cms
I have a large torso and shorter legs for my size.
Anyone have any advice with regards to what size would be better for me?

I have a mate shorter than you, but same body shape (medium torso, short legs) who rides a Defy M - gives him a fairly upright position though, I must say.

If you're comfortable on your road bike it might be worth comparing the geo and tube measurements first to see which size is closest to it. Also taking a couple of measyrements with a tape is an option. Unfortunately if you don't know the bike shop it's imperative to take rssponsability for this yourself, there's an LBS near where I live which is infamous for selling people the bike they want to move as oppossed to the bike which suits the rider. Nice choice on the bike, I've been drooling over one myself.

I've had questions on the size of my defy from day one. It works fine but it's twitchy.
I'll consult a third shop tomorrow and see what they say.
Thanks. The bike is well appointed for the $. And I like the unusual paint job.

I've a Kona Honky Inc that had its frame replaced with a Kona Rove frame under warranty.
From all the hassles with Kona warranty in Australia I can thoroughly recommend NEVER buying a Kona in this country. (The online support from Kona USA/Canada was the only good thing I can say about their warranty services)

if you want to read up on some of the warranty hassles.

The LBS where I've bought our last 5 bikes has a fleet of shop bikes to lend to customers to help them decide. Maybe there's something like that near you? I tried to order a bike there once and he wouldn't until I'd riden something similar for a week, because he thought I wouldn't like it! It's a really good service because they genuinely want the customer to be happy.

Sounds great. I've booked in with a bike shop in Brunswick who will spend an hour fitting you up for $80. If you buy a bike through them they wave the fee.

Did focus fix the problem with front fork shudder?
I can't seem to find if this was ever resolved or not. The fork looks beefy enough but there was a Good review that said the fork was shite. It's also an odd size steerer so you can't just replace it with an aftermarket cx fork from 3t or enve.
I'm interested in buying a mares ax 1 myself but the fork worried me.

As I said, I'm interested in getting an ax 1 myself but haven't been able to find out if this has been fixed. This was 2 years ago but google different forums shows last year people were still having issues.

2014 cx has new frame and new forks. Assume the ax is the same.

Sounds promising. I don't think the ax has thru axel though, but can't tell from photos. It would be awesome if does. Have you seen one in real life?
