You only need a paddock / playground etc to make CX course...you can put one together in a couple of hours with a little imagination ( no giant bloody diggers required  ) .Race on it the next day then forget about for a year.

This is why it is great to have a CX venue available...

Yeah great if you have one... Just saying that you don't have to have anything special to organize a cross race... Of the 50 or 60 races held close by to chez moi non are more than paddocks or parks uses once or twice a season.

Agreed TLL. Just that it's getting harder to obtain permits to race these days - on road or off. So having the owners of Essendon Fields allowing space for a CX course is fantastic!

The goats could be a unique obstacle...wont be long before it will catch on in Europe

That was my first thought too! I wonder if specially trained obstacle goats are a valuable niche market? :)

In all seriousness though, my block would fit the bill pretty well i think, 45 acres basically consisting of a fairly steep sided valley and a little bit of flat ground at the bottom. 3 dams atm and another 1 or 2 to go in, so good scenery and plenty of water to mix up the mud if the sky doesn't cooperate..

In theory, sure. And there are plenty of paddocks out in woop woop, but only the die hard cx tragics will be there, you won't get a DDCX style event with 350 racers, and even more spectators, schlepping out for that. The poor turnout at Lysterfield proved this.

Stewards of parklands, schools etc are very reluctant to turn their grounds over to anyone, for any purpose, even if the damage done is superficial and disappears in a month. NIMBYs (see photo above) are a powerful force. Plus most parks in Melb are either 'passive' recreation, aka unorganised activity only, or if they're 'active' then they're cricket/footy fields and stewarded by the sporting club who definitely won't let it happen.

It's much easier for them just to say no than to work out a way to make it happen.

That's the massive urban sprawl that is Australian cities... Where as we have a little town on every intersection over here  ... A lot less space overall but a lot more puddles to play in.
