Surly recall

Postby Boognoss » Fri Sep 10, 2010 11:54 am

Lifted from Sydney Cyclist:

Surly bike recall

The Surly Crosscheck and the Surly Long Haul Trucker bikes sold between February 2006 and August 2010 have been recalled in Australia and should not be ridden. Owners should contact the dealer immediately because 'failure of the brake cable could result in the cable impacting the tyre and this may potentially lead to loss of control and possible injury.
Some bicycles may not be fitted with a brake cable catch hook to the cantilever brakes'.

Consumers should contact the store of purchase or Dirt Works Australia Pty Ltd. via email - warranty@dirtworks.com.au or phone 02-9679-8400

Agree. I should be panicking that my CX bike doesn't have one of these hook things that I've never seen......

I think that's why Shimano developed those awful fixed length cantilever brake straddles - to avoid the problem of a brake cable snapping and the trad straddle catching on a knobby tire. I've got them on my home made tandem for that reason but they really compromise the stopping power of the brakes.

Or you could just change to V brake and V levers and never have to worry about it again.

v-brakes sure, but not with narrow rims unless your frame has really close set brake bosses. Cantilevers have superior adjustability.

What do you do with 'em? Are they to give to the surgeon to set your bones after the accident?

They're reflector mounts which go on the brake bridge and fork. The idea is that they will stop the straddle cable from catching on the tyre if the main brake cable breaks.

Looks like the Pugley isn't going too well. Maybe they are trying to take too much weight out of it.

I referring to recalls, not anything else like sales, ride-ability etc.
