My Surly got dirty!

Postby Baalzamon » Sat Mar 22, 2014 10:41 pm

Did the Audax Dirty Weekend day 1 East of Mundy. Bike is nice n dirty now :)
No I'm not cleaning it, day 2 dirty is tomorrow. I'll be posting before and after photos.
Went and did the railway heritage trail from Mundaring and went to Wundowie and return using the kep track as well. It was very dusty and my nice new chain will need a nice clean and I prefer not to clean new chains until necessary as the manufacturer lube is the best

Ride was good. All riders finished. 1 finished with 2 mins to spare on the 1st day!
Having a mechanical didn't help which cost me 10 mins, and for a section I was really considering pulling out. There is a section on the kep track that is used by horse riders and it's cut up and it's very very loose dirt there as well. So I was doing 8kph or so. Fitter riders were going faster.
2nd day everyone finished and there was 1 crash as well.

I was running 35-40psi in my tyres. Schwalbe Mondials 26 x 2.0"

The bike has now had a thorough clean and I'm keeping my eyes on my brakes. They are hydraulic Magura HS33r 2014 brakes. And as you can see dirt has built up where fluid has leaked. Now that is most likely from when I trimmed my hoses. But if I keep getting dirt buildup there then I've got a leak.

Looks great Baalzamon.
Love the utalitarian look of the racks/fenders and fat Mondials.
What chainrings/cassette are you running?
Surly Ogre, Extrawheel trailer.

Rear cassette is 11-36 ratio and the chainrings are 24-32-42. Gives me a very nice low ratio, lower than the rohloff.

Yes I'd really like the Rohloff to be at least one whole gear inch lower for trailer work.
I had to push up a lot of hills on my south coast tour that I'd have preferred to ride up due to the roads shoulder being a couple of inches deep in pea-gravel.
To a point, I miss the Moultons hill climbing ability.
