With your Reid, I'd go for this http://www.freeload.co.nz/ I use one and they're great. Innovative NZ tech and now owned by Thule.

Just need to be aware of heel clearance on a regular road bike, but the freeload can extend out and away from your heels. Very good for light touring, which would be the case in NZ... Back packs wouldn't be comfy at all.

Alternative is to get a new fork with rack threads. Not a major thing to swap out a fork on your bike.

Cheers Lincoln. Did the trip in February. Ended up using a large carradice saddlebag.

The Reid's been retired since ;)
