Buying a touring bicycle in Perth

Postby mieke207 » Sun Sep 22, 2013 7:23 pm

Hey all,

I plan to cycle south western Australia in November starting in Perth. The only thing I still need is a bicycle. ;)
I have a good one at home (Europe, The Netherlands), but since I don't like to take my bicycle on a plane and I also plan to travel Australia in December / January by other means of transportation, I thought it would be more convenient to buy a (second hand) bicycle in Perth. Since I need to carry four panniers and plan to do some off-road tracks, I need a decent touring bike with racks, or with the possibility to attach my own racks. I have already had a look at Gumtree and bikeexchange.com, but it might be wiser to visit a good bicycle store.
What do you think? What is the best way to buy a relatively cheap bike (under $500,-), and do all bicycles have the possibility to attach racks on the front fork? What would it cost to buy a rack at a bicycle store in Perth, or to replace the chain and cassette? I'm a bit in doubt because, on the one hand, I want a reliable bicycle, but on the other hand, I will only use it for a month so I don't want to invest too much. :|

Thanks for your replies,
Mieke.

Hi

You will be hard pushed to buy a touring bike off the floor in a bike shop here in Perth and even more so for little dollars. Best option would be a low-end flat bar bike that would take a commuter style rack. You are not likely to get Tubus racks for example in a bike shop.

Just had a quick peruse on bikeexchange and there are a few Kona Dew bikes ($419) which look like they can take front/rear panniers as they have the mounts for them. My advice is if you can bring the racks with you otherwise you will be getting something non tubus which would be around $50 and you may have to get a front pannier rack ordered in.

One month? Perhaps rent one from http://aboutbikehire.com.au
$265 for touring bike for 4 weeks
or maybe the "Minda biddi package" that includes panniers and tools $400 for 4 weeks
http://aboutbikehire.com.au/prices.aspx

But I am not sure if the specs of the bikes are good. People here will know.

Good luck and enjoy WA :)

Hey,

Thanks for your information! I'll have a look at bike rental (I thought renting a bike would be much more expensive!), and keep an eye on Gumtree and Bikeexchange.

Cheers,
Mieke.
