Which handlebar adapter for cell phone?

Postby rifraf » Wed Feb 05, 2014 11:48 pm

Hi,
bought myself an iPhone for xmas.
Not had a smart phone before so know little about them or how to use them. :oops:
First thing I'd like to find out is which is the best way of attaching it to the handlebars and is there a consensus on whats the best cover for one?
Theres so much info out there its confusing (well to a retrogrouch like me anyway)

So far I've spotted that B&M have one:
https://www.bike24.net/1.php?content=8; ... 0,245|3730|||||||" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

and I think I spotted a variant in the Apple shop when I was in there back in December.

I'd like to get an idea on what the folks here use, having read of a few of us now utilising cell phones for maps and many of the functions of the Garmin units like speed, cadence etc.

Thanks for any input. :)

I can recommend one of these have used for both my iPhone 4 &5s http://www.this link is broken/Topeak-Ride ... r-iPhone-5" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Very robust and makes a good day to day phone cover also.

Quadlock cases/mounts are excellent; very happy with mine.

I've been looking at this for awhile now and IMO the best I've seen so far are these...

This is heavily dependent on what phone you have.

I use this: http://www.topeak.com/products/bags/sma ... rybag_5_bk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; as it mounts to the stem cap on my bike, which I find handy.

I think it also depends whether you are planning on mounting the phone on your handle bars or just keeping it loose in your pocket or handle bar bag...

why would you want a handlebar mount if it was going to go in your pocket...? :|

Just trying to make the point that while some may have good mounts they might have bulky, awkward covers when being stored in a pocket...versatility...

I haven't used one but a mate uses quad lock and I am extremely tempted to get one myself - I'm kicking myself for not taking advantage of the bna sale offer over Christmas!

ah, right. for what it's worth, the quadlock case is relatively slim, slips into a pocket fine. although i dont use it normally.

I think I'm going to give the Quadlock case a try as the the one I wanted won't fit my handlebars (Barfly)...my only dislike with the Quadlock is the case doesn't offer much protection from rain, the cover doesn't protect underneath the phone where the camera lens is...maybe I'll give it a try, hmm...

Edit. Changed my mind...this product isn't up to the task. This review confirms my issues with the Quadlock.

Confirms your issues? All I take from that review is that it doesn't protect the camera lens. Sounds like it otherwise offers good wet weather protection...?

I don't agree KGB...

Case leaks and poncho severely reduces the effectiveness of the touch screen...no thanks.

I got one from ibikeconsole for my S4.

I wouldn't carry the phone around in the case but you can if really want. Been more then happy with it.

After what seemed such a long search I've decided to go with BioLogic's hard case, I almost changed my mind with the Quadlock but the lack of water resistance and having to remove the rubber cover while the iPhone was charging from my dynamo was a deal breaker for me...

The quadlock looks very well made but I like the look of nezumis mount. Its waterproof and will accommodate most phones when upgraditis hits.

The bad is it would get hot sealed up under the sun I think so at times it would need to be half open or something to allow air in. I tried using my Ortlieb bar bag map holder but in the sun it really heats up. Rain though it was okay. I totally relied on my phones GPS when in Asia but 95% of the time I just left it inside the bar bag and checked my location when needed.
