Wayward Cape York

Postby b3n » Thu Apr 23, 2015 6:30 pm

Does anyone have experience with these bikes? Specifically I'm looking at the Cape York model, for long term loaded touring (camping gear etc). Previous touring experience was on an MTB frame (On-One Inbred) that I built specifically for the purpose.

I'm particularly interested in how it handles a 'full' load, and the tyre clearances. I've emailed Wayward who reckon it's more than a match for (as an example) the LHT. Any practical experience?

From Dirtworks, the former Surly distributor, so reputable company.

As a brand Wayward is fairly new to the market, presumably a response to Dirtworks loosing Surly. I don't know of anybody who actually owns one.

The best value touring bike available here is the Vivente World Randonneur. There are quite a few owners here.

The story I got from them was that they left Surly to start Wayward but...yeah :D

I'm also looking at the VWR as a result of the comments on this site. At around $1700 the Wayward is tempting as well though.

Well, that may be true, it's never been clear what happened.
However all three bikes use 4130 frames manufactured in Asia with pretty well identical geometry, and assembled with similar components, so it comes down to which offers the best bang for your buck.

Following this thread.

I'm thinking about building up a disc brake commuter bike and the frame set is on the list of options along with the Genesis Croix de fer (don't like the price tag) or maybe a Specialized AWOL (not sure about the long head tube). Other option is heading down the Chinese Ti route (quality/warranty risks) so the Cape York is looking like a front runner.

I bought the Wayward Nullarbor frame (rim brake version of the Cape York) and built up my own bike, as I had most of the parts off my other bike.

Similar scenario here - probably cannibalise a Giant.

Planning on putting on a double chainring (compact) - can I expect any issues with chain line or chainstay clearances?

Wayward Bicycle server appears to be down.
I did find some info here:
http://cycletraveller.com.au/australia/ ... sie-market" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Which suggested the frames were made using Reynolds tubing

"The bikes have been designed to fit an attractive price point, with the Nullarbor to retail at $1,399 and the Cape York at $1,599. The sturdy Reynolds tubing frames come with bar-end shifters and a reliable mix of Shimano components, including cranks and Deore deraillures. Cyclists looking to run higher specs on these models can purchase the frames for $499 and $639, respectively."

Check out their Facebook page. They have a new offroad model coming soon - the Oodnadatta.

Seem like they are going all out for revenge on Surly.

Received a very prompt response to my email enquiry about frame set colour and weight (big issues here[emoji2][emoji2][emoji2]) - see below:

thanks for your interest in Wayward Bicycle Co

The Cape York frameset would make an excellent commuter base to build on.

there are two colours available in frame/fork kits. Copper and black.

Complete Cape York bikes are in the copper colour only.

weight on a medium is 2.3kgs. that includes seatclamp and all the bolts for cages, racks etc.

Their server is now working for me and I can get their webpage up.

I can see some pics of the Oodnadatta but is there any posts offering info?
I spotted from the pics that they are not using the Reynolds for this one.

I put a triple ring on with no dramas, except that the FD is a little high due to the number of teeth on the large gear, but it shifts fine ATM.

Only that it's a Fatbike, and that it's 'coming soon' IIRC...

Umm not so sure about that, I would say more fargo type than fat. Have a look around the web pages and you will see pics of Gary (who I am guessing is the person who has done most of the wayward product design, and rode a fargo for years) on a clear coat test bike, more 29plus than 700c but aimed at off tar rides.
Dirtworks have been fatbike riders as well as the importers for the original brands salsa and surly for a long time, so they would know the numbers sold but to me the main issue with bringing in a fat bike is that they have a buy as a second or third bike issue and not as a number one do it all which can tour, commute and just ride or poke about.
Fargos type bikes do make very good all rounders, and while I don't really need a new bike but I would be pretty keen on a waywood type fargo frame that I could shift bits on and off depending on what sort of trip or ride I would be doing. Orange is the very best colour for bikes but kinda waiting on news of what sizes and the type of steel it will be made of.

Yes, probably 29er+ from the width of the chainstays.
And besides, DirtWorks already have a fatbike brand called SaltedBikes.

Commuter Cycles in Melbourne is having a sale with 25% off the Cape York at the minute in limited sizes. Check them out on Facebook. $1200 is a steal ...

There is also $500 off a Rohlhoff Vivente Gibb...

They posted on the facebook page that the Oodnadatta would be rolling on Dice Ollie rims, which I believe are fat.

I'd also be seriously interested in a Fargo-type offering.

I can't make any sense at all out of their Facebook page.
Where exactly on the page did you spot that?

The FB embed link doesn't seem to work but it's from April 16 and includes frameset pics. It's in the comments.
