Yes, but there is no hassle about signing up.
Ok cheers Ron so the concept is you click on a product you wish to purchase at the end of the product sale period if loads of people buy as well the price keeps going down. You get notified it's ended with the final price then you cough up the coin ending in a heavily reduced item or not so reduced item depending on the amount of buyers is that about it?

Pretty much. You can either join the drop at the top price or commit to purchase at the lower of the two prices on offer. If sufficient people sign up to set that price in stone then that is what you are required to pay.

It is not getting much love at all ... a flag to investigate further as Massdrop is not always the best price and/or best product choice.

I did that - it's a good price, particularly for the Elite 850.

Look through the discussion and you will see that this is the fourth time this drop has been repeated, so it seems it is a very popular item.

That does not say anything more than there has been four drops. There is no information on quantity so we have no real idea of demand. I note that two persons taking up the drop puts the drop in place at the first price and that four is all that is required for the lower price, that makes 12 units sold over what two years? Popular? I would want more information to make a judgement and see how genuine well respected brands of quilts go in comparison.

Also struggling to find reviews on the 850 Elite besides the likes of Amazon and there is not a sufficient number of reviews at Amazon on the 850 for http://Fakespot.com to work.

Only positive in my view it is at the lower price point for quilts so less of a risk in trying it out. That said having owned a Sierra Designs bag, it was an okay product but nothing special (weighty and does not compress down very small) in comparison to my more expensive Mont Bell). It reflected its price so nothing to be surprised there. I no longer use it.

Not sure you will tick the box with your packing size either with this quilt or any quilt for that matter.

No idea of quantity but I think your extrapolation based on the current drop is pure guesswork. Drops are only repeated by popular demand. Even so I would not expect a specialist item like this to be a big volume seller.

And I have no difficulty finding enough reviews to satisfy myself that it would be worthy of the investment.

The packed size stated is usually the size of the stuff sack provided and in my experience can be packed significantly smaller by using a compression sack, as I do with all my sleeping bags.

However, if it was easy to find a quilt that is better than my Marmot Hydrogen I would have bought one years ago. I believe this comes the closest yet but I won't be buying one as it won't fit my Exped LW mat.

Delorme InReach SE or Explorer now on offer.

It's a good price, but I'd check with Pivotel if there are any additional charges for local activation of an overseas purchased unit before ordering.

Massdrop have another jacket option on offer, the RAB Strata Hoody Jacket. The drop price is ~ AU$175 so maybe on the pricey side.

A while ago I developed Type 2 Macular Degeneration. Good treatment but some vision loss in the eye. When I learned more about the condition (and about the long term effects of sunlight on my blue eyes), I decided to wear sunglasses more,

I got a set of American Optical glass lenses (polarized) as well as a set of Julbo alpine-style glasses with the leather side protectors. I like the Julbo more as they are more comfortable and provide more protection. Got mine from MEC in Canada (http://www.mec.ca) last summer.

Today I saw them on Massdrop with 4 different colored lenses. Committed to 2 more sets the blue lenses and the black lenses at $100 USD/each set + shipping to my friend in the UAE (won't ship to me in Qatar).

Now I will have more variety for my Cape York trip in July 8) Excellent vision protection, too. Why 3 sets of these glasses? Well, I have 2 different touring bicycles, a Brompton folder, and a Greenspeed GTO (as well as a brand-new Indian KWI copy of the old pre-war Philips style roadster). I also have women colleagues (here in Doha) who have at least 10 pairs of shoes... Yup, only 10 or 12....or ???

Thanks to RonK's initial "Heads Up" I have been watching Massdrop and have made a number of purchases.

Once upon a time when married with youngsters, camping with a Coleman stove and lantern was great. But life changes and children grow up . I now bicycle alone. And now I have purchased another (offered today) Massdrop offer: a Kovea Spider stove with the adapters to use the 2 or 3 different types of gas canisters. Once I was quite happy with a Whisperlite International. Then came the SIGG stove set that I used bicycling in Australia 3 different times. So now for Europe bicycling it seems the Kovea Spider will be good for France, Iceland and the rest of Europe.

Why so many stoves? Not sure, but ask any woman how many pairs of shoes she has. All good stuff - those shoes, I mean. Looking forward to trying "bottles gas" instead of "shellite" when cooking somewhere. Thanks again RonK.

I would appreciate anyones opinion on the current Outdoor Research Helium HD jacket and pants. I am particularly interested in the pants but an extra jacket would not be a problem either

Thanks

I have the jacket and like it. Worn a couple times only (not had the weather for it).

I can't comment in detail about breathability. That said, I can't recall ever having one breathable enough — including an arcteryx gore tex jacket

Edit. I have the Helium II

I cannot help you with the Outdoor Research Helium HD but I would suggest taking a look at the offerings at http://ultralightoutdoors.co.uk, at least to give you an idea of other options. They let you sort of weight which is really handy IMO. BTW their price on the Helium HD is AU$188.83 (after excluding VAT) so that makes the Massdrop price a nice discount.

Personally I would be considering the Helium II jacket as it is lighter at 184g for the large size and cheaper at $168 delivered.

Thanks. I don't think it does make such a nice discount though. Cost is roughly $128 USD. which equates to around $178 aud. the pants are probably good value though. I like ultralightoutdoorgear. Their prices are pretty good.

FWIW I have the helium II jacket and marmot essence jacket. They are similar weight. However, I prefer the essence as it is by far the most breathable jacket I have tried (also have had marmot precip and patagonia torrentshell). The essence is the one jacket I can keep wearing when it is not raining without getting really sweaty.

However, worth noting, the same thing that makes it super breathable means it is not as warm in heavy wind.

Paddy Pallin had them on sale in oz for $160 a few weeks ago, but seem to be gone now. Probably can find them on sale in the states. If you are going marmot, definitely worth stumping up a few more $ for the essence over the precip

Remember back to our earlier discussions about down jackets, rain jackets and wind shirts.

You will need all three for NZ in May.

I didn't rate the Marmot jackets for bike packing, despite being a Marmot fan as you know (and a Precip owner).

Your Showers Pass Elite will be fine but perhaps a little bulky.

Come to think of it, last time I cycled NZ in May it was cold enough that I wore my SP Elite constantly, so maybe a wind shirt is superfluous.

But you'll definitely need something warm and packable to wear off the bike.

I have been buying a few odd things from massdrop for more than 12 months. One thing that struck me from the onset is that they couldn't adhere to a secure postage system (despite charging quite a high price). This problem was compounded by their prohibitive stance on delivering to post office boxes (despite Aust. Post being contracted out to deliver the pieces when the parcels arrived on our shores). Sometimes the parcels required a signature (so you would have to pick up from the PO with ID), sometimes they would leave it at the door or stuff it in the mailbox, and sometimes, quite perplexingly, they would notify you that the article has been delivered (only for it to actually show up on your doorstep 3 days later). There is to rhyme or reason to these different options. When you pay for postage, you have absolutely no idea what form it will take (and neither do Massdrop .... or at least if they do, they are unable to tell you about it while the drop is active).

I wrote to them and brought this to their attention. It doesn't make sense that they sell top end products yet can't deliver the goods in a uniform secure manner. It is just asking for trouble. They gave some diplomatic answer about future possibilities.

Well I finally have had an article chime in with the "delivered" notification yet be nowhere to be found (MIA after a period longer than 10 working days). Their reply was that they have a policy not to deal with such matters since it was likely misplaced by the couriers (and furthermore, they don't have the tracking details to chase up with the courier ... go figure). They did however say in my case they would make an exception and refund me (probably because I have an extensive purchasing history and the MIA article was not particularly expensive).

Anyway, I thought I would put all this out there, and let others take what they will from this case in point. I have purchased numerous things from many different countries .... its kind of disappointing that in the postage dept. they can't compete with chinese distributors who are selling uniformly securely trackable things for $10 or so dollars (or even follow a business model that it seems other american distributors are capable of offering .... namely signature tracking on each and every order).

My gripe is not so much about the postage.... even if it is high, you can just factor it in with the price to work out what sort of deal is in the taking .... my gripe is that you only have one postage option and you ( and them too apparently ), have no way to establish what sort of postage service you will be paying for.

Best of luck with receiving it.
Other battery items on Massdrop I believe, have been tagged USA delivery only.
I hope you receive yours.

Also I've read reports, outside of Massdrop, of units like the Mi Xiaomi batteries being sent back after making it all the way to Aus customs fairly recently.

I'm yet to find or read a clear explanation but there is anecdotal evidence within the Ausbargain site "drops".

Anyone else hear rumours of this?

EDIT: in this Massdrop product discussion,in answer to comment 4, Massdrop "buying manager" B.Hutch, in answer to XypherKnights "Why does this only ship to the US?"
offers the following link:
https://www.massdrop.com/buy/naztech-26 ... lk/2036889

If indeed it turns out these are unavailable for purchase outside the USA, "perhaps" those disappointed might be able to console themselves with the likes (not like for like however) of:
