The phanton 4 is certainly quite large and heavy, my partner found one submerged in the the breakers on our local beach a few weeks ago, not an ideal environment. Even though it was full of water and sand the memory card in the camera still proved to be ok.RonK wrote:The Phantom 4 is by all accounts a great drone but I couldn't think one more impractical for touring when you can have a Mavic Pro.

And the whispers were right. This week saw the announcement of the DJI Spark, a mini drone with most of the advanced features of the Mavic Pro. Looks fantastic and will be even more portable for cycle touring photography. Pity it wasn't released before I went on tour.

But I had lingering doubts about how portable it would be on a bike tour, and whether I'd be discouraged from carrying one and using it.
Then the Spark was released. It looked promising - much smaller, but not foldable. Not overly tempted.
And now - small and foldable, the Mavic Air is getting very close to the mark.

The same with any technology really. It changes so fast, anything you buy is likely to be superseded by something better/cheaper the next day.CKinnard wrote:Drones would have to be the fastest evolving consumer tech currently. If you can wait 6,12,18 mths, you are bound to get more bang for buck, in a tighter longer lasting package.

I'm going to hold out until they come out with a palm sized one with gossamer thin harness and tow rope in order to tow me up steep hillsRonK wrote:When the Mavic Pro hit the market, it looked the one to have - foldable and portable.

hehe - with all that gear you haul around you'd need a tugboat sized drone.rifraf wrote:I'm going to hold out until they come out with a palm sized one with gossamer thin harness and tow rope in order to tow me up steep hills

Could also provide a cooling breeze. But I'm afraid that the amount of pull required might generate a significant head wind
Of course, to justify perpetual motion, it can be recharged on the down hill.

The P4 is available at several retail outlets refurbished for about $600 less so it is a hard choice between the 2.
P4 is a bit bigger (and I'm going to be living off my bike for 6 weeks in Norway) so that is a factor for sure..
Anyone find any really hot deals lately?
