The phanton 4 is certainly quite large and heavy, my partner found one submerged in the the breakers on our local beach a few weeks ago, not an ideal environment. Even though it was full of water and sand the memory card in the camera still proved to be ok.

Considering the uncertainties and lengthy delays in delivery, I ended up cancelling my Massdrop order for the DJI Mavic Pro. And by the time stocks became available there where whispers going around that DJI were soon to release an even smaller drone, so I never did re-order. But oh how much I regretted not having it on my recent tour in New Zealand.

And the whispers were right. This week saw the announcement of the DJI Spark, a mini drone with most of the advanced features of the Mavic Pro. Looks fantastic and will be even more portable for cycle touring photography. Pity it wasn't released before I went on tour.

Not exactly, I'd be looking at the Fly More Combo.

Meh - it's no big deal if hand gesture control is not yet perfect.

When the Mavic Pro hit the market, it looked the one to have - foldable and portable.

But I had lingering doubts about how portable it would be on a bike tour, and whether I'd be discouraged from carrying one and using it.

Then the Spark was released. It looked promising - much smaller, but not foldable. Not overly tempted.

And now - small and foldable, the Mavic Air is getting very close to the mark.

Drones would have to be the fastest evolving consumer tech currently. If you can wait 6,12,18 mths, you are bound to get more bang for buck, in a tighter longer lasting package.

The same with any technology really. It changes so fast, anything you buy is likely to be superseded by something better/cheaper the next day.
