Nitto Campee front racks 650b
Postby Bendo » Mon Jan 30, 2017 10:41 am
I'm particularly interested in how they attach. It looks like the 650b version of the Campee attaches to a top eyelet on your fork dropout, whereas the 700c has a curved strut to attach to the lower eyelet. They also look like they attach to canti bosses, but I was wondering whether there was enough adjustability to go high enough for centrepull bosses. b

I have a very old one in the shed I can see if it is like the one you want. Ran it on a 26 inch with cantis but have a range of wheels sizes at the moment to test height (be quick, daughters 650 c bike for about a week more!!)

The base/ bottom fits into solid into the front eyelet with a small spacer. It has a large solid lower lug with just two M5 (?) holes for adjustment. The rack in the pic looks too small for the wheel size, not sure I would be keen on having that long a lower lug with adjustment holes brace to get it up and over the mud guard.

That lower eyelet set up with the curved strut seems to be Nitto's default set-up for the 700c version of the Campee. Odd, I agree. bbaabaa wrote:My one works via a horizontal brace/ strut going mid fork into eyelets or C or P clips. Again built for a 26 inch wheel.

Thanks for the pic. I have similar mid fork eyelets to yours, meant for my front rack but on thinking about it they might work for the struts. You say it's your 'main bike'. You're obviously happy with their performance then? And it looks like you use them as an ordinary front rack without the low-rider bits. badktz wrote:I run the 700c version on my main bike. Does your fork have mid-fork or lowrider eyelets? I have seen people run struts, I'm guessing either from Nitto or maybe there are some bodge jobs using Tubus etc

Re the low rider wings or whatever they be called, I found them to be a bit of a pest so took them off and never put them back on.
Fancy frame that Bendo, why not ask the frame builder to match up your fork specs with the best nitto to fit?

Apologies I was in a bit of a rush and didn't explain myself. I use it on a bike with the cantilever mounts, that image is one I saw online using struts to the fork.
The rack is great. I use it with a Wald basket zip-tied on top. The lowriders (660g inc bolts if you care) are left at home for general commuting, added back on for overnighters/touring/groceries as needed. I probably overload it a bit. I chose the Nitto over the VO version because I plan on travelling with my bike and it would pack a little more flat.

A bit like installing Honjos! As my woodwork teacher used to say, "measure 7 times, cut once." bgrantw wrote:Thanks Bendo, it was a very fiddly job, and nerve wracking when you start cutting into the tangs of the rack to get it low enough...

I have passed you on this bike a couple times, including pretty close to where this photo was taken...grantw wrote:If it helps I've got a velo orange campeur on my Sam Hillborne, pretty similar to the Nitto except the pannier racks are permanently fixed. I had the option of attaching to either the mid fork brazeons or on the canti studs and went for the first option as it seemed less fiddling around.

And then, happy with the way they work? Look to flair out and down a bit.
Need a robust pair for a uni ss bike I am building for the daughter, she has small hands so the cane creek caliper levers I have will be a big reach and as it will be a canberra bike (ie, it is flat) I can see her riding on the bar tops for most of her rides.
