Rohloff setup, crankset spinning when bike is pushed.

Postby polishbiker » Thu Mar 30, 2017 8:22 pm

Hi there people with rohloff equipped bikes : )

I had my thorn for 4 years now and used it quite a bit but i cannot remember if the crank used to spin when the bike is just being pushed or not.

I noticed it today, is it normal?
I am due to replace the chain and the bearings (phil wood) were replaced about 2000kms ago by a bike shop.

a) nothing to worry about
b) loose/worn chain
c) loose BB bearings?
d)?

Any input is welcome.

Thank you.

Normal. One of the annoying things about them.
Shows how much internal drag they have.

Mine has done it since I've had it.

Huge PITA.

Its one of my biggest dislikes about the Rohloff as many is the bruised shin/ankle/calf I've received from simply trying to push my bike uphill.

Still, other than a couple of oil changes...........

I'm unsure if theres a cause (and affect).

Mines a CC version (quick release) if its a notable correlation.

I've a vague recollection of reading tightness at the dropouts being a possible factor.

As my Ogre utilises horizontal dropouts, I have to use a really tight QR torque or suffer movement (side twisting) within the dropouts.

I also utilise a couple of tug nuts to minimalise this but still have to really be assertive with the QR.

I figure this might be a part of the problem but its a little late in the day to start wishing I'd bought a solid axle version.

I believe Surly are now recommending the solid axle version for the Ogre, if a forum post I read is accurate.

Glad this was mentioned, I'm new to Rohloff, and this does annoy me a bit. I like the left pedal at 6 o clock before I mount the bike. If I push it a little first the pedal is no longer in position.

A little drop of oil on the inside of the drive sprocket seems to help with seal drag...

My speedhub does it too. Can be annoying at times but only minor. I'm using quick release version with Pitlock skewers.
