Jones Plus build

Postby avolve » Tue Jun 06, 2017 10:37 am

I spoke with Jeff Jones last week, and I am about to order a Jones Plus (steel diamond frame) in grey with truss fork, Jones loop bar, Jones headset, Revelate-Jones frame and truss fork bags.

I am still putting together a list of components, and interested in other's thoughts.

Drivetrain
I am looking at 1x11, and considering Box One (11-46), with an oval chainring (30T) — lots of options.
Crank possibly Surly OD (?)

Brakes
Still unsure as yet. Was initially leaning to mechanical-hydro hybrids. Considering hydro... too many options

Wheels
Front hub SON 28 15 150mm
Rear hub still thinking about it.
Discussing rims with LBS (who will do the build)
Tyres still working on it.

Considering a thudbuster seat post. Seat tbd

We'll all be green with envy.

I'd be going full hydro for the brakes - if only for the self-adjusting advantage.

Thudbuster? Ugh, ugh ugly...

Looking forward to this.

What size are you going for?

24" Diamond frame (medium). Was initially looking at the (smaller) Space frame, and after a good chat with Jeff, the diamond is better suited for size (backpacking space and weight) with only a small difference in vertical compliance.

Nice one.

I went with the LX trail brakes on my ECR due to the longer levers that I find work well with Jones bars.

Pads will probably only last around 2500kms but they are only $8 a pair.

That was my thinking too.

Hi Avolve,

The build sounds great. I am wondering why go with a 1x chainring? Is there any real advantage when touring? Also what sort of riding is the bike for?

I agree with Ron regarding brakes, go with full hydro as they are self adjusting. Shimano make full trekking/touring groupsets including LX. They make the BL-T675-B for touring. Checkout http://productinfo.shimano.com/#/lc/2.0

Not much choice really. On a 29er Plus it is difficult to acheive clearance between the chain and tyre with a 2x chainset.

The 675 that uad782 linked to.

I didn't like them to start with but they are growing on me.

The FrameSet is on its way from Portland to my lbs. hopefully will be there when I get back into town.

Unfortunately the H Bar is out of stock for a few weeks. Either looking for a source locally or waiting (can't afford the Ti version).

Also included frambag and truss fork bags, and a few other goodie in the order.

Have also ordered a SON 28 250 dynamo (bike24) and waiting for it. Rear hub will likely be Hope. Wheels to be built by lbs.

For brakes, leaning towards Shimano XT T8000. For drivetrain, considering SRAM Eagle GX.

Will update when more decisions made/have and other questions/seeking suggestions.

I was considering the SRAM Eagle GX (not available for another ~6 weeks). Unexpectedly, the e*thirteen provides 511% range (more than the 50T Eagle). Should be more than enough!

I am considering a second wheel set with runaround/commuting tires. Not sure how easy a cheaper set will be to come by (even second hand)...

The build was finally ready fora quick ride today.

Build list is pretty clear we to above. Added a lay back Thompson seat post. Waiting on a 40mm Thompson headset, and crank brothers double shot pedals (matched to Giro Privateer R shoes).

Here's a pic for those interested (until I have some more) https://www.instagram.com/p/BYaMpIGF2q9/

Great build! I'm looking at putting together something similar. Can I ask how much the postage was on the frame? Getting things to Tassie is a bit more expensive at the best of times so I'm wondering what kind of hit I should prepare myself for :)

Whereas the shipping was not cheap at $360. It was the FedEx clearance charge that hurt much much more (just shy of $550 — was not like I had a choice at that point).

I hope to have some more pics to share soonish...

We will!

Just before I picked it up from the lbs, the owner took it for a quick spin. A long time BMX rider, the smile on his face said a lot about the balance and build... :D
