Wikipedia has a much larger image that might help Ted Ryko on his world record breaking journey from Adelaide to Darwin in 1914 Must have been taken early in the trip because of (1) the railway lines & (2) the other bike, I presume Jack Fahey's.

I guess it's the gasunit for the carbide lamp.

Maybe, it certainly looks like some sort of fuel container. The only carbide lamps I have seen had a canister that screws onto the bottom of the lamp itself. Given the trip was 28 days, I would be surprised if the were carrying enough carbide to ride much at night - I thought the typical container lasted around 3 hours

Yes it looks overly complicated but he had a lamp, that is bigger than the normal carbide lamps with attached gasproducer and there is a pipe or tube going to the handlebar.

Ryko rode quite a lot at night, navigating by the stars. Riding at night was cooler.

Yes, that photo was taken early in the trip. They rode on the ballast because it was easier going than the track. Yes, you are right, the other bike belongs to Jack Fahey. The photo was taken near Lake Eyre; Ted is adjusting the cones.
