Ortlieb Panniers - adding lower hooks

Postby rifraf » Sun Aug 13, 2017 5:52 pm

I'm using front and rear Ortlieb Roller Classics and for the most part I'm satisfied.

I've been thinking about adding to each pannier an extra lower hook to see if it will better secure my panniers to the racks.

I'm sure this has been covered ad nauseam, but I've had little success with my attempts at using the search engine.

Anyone experimented in this regard with Roller Classics?

Can someone confirm the correct hook for Classics with be the QL-1 lower hooks https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/luggage/ort ... 07&geoc=AU

I think they are QL-1 based on the runners looking like this one: https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/luggage/ort ... 07&geoc=AU

If it makes any difference I'm using Tubus Cosmo and Nova racks

Cheers for any response

I use a strap around the pannier and rack/frame to keep them more secure, and makes it a touch harder for others to take them off (I'm generally not concerned with that though).

Works great for rough stuff touring.

Good to know some people are still in here and contributing to the threads.

What sort of strap are you using :?:

I've had an issue in the past with a occy strap (elasticated with hooks) managing to get itself in love with my spokes.

It was a saved situation and not the disaster it could have been but I've been a little wary since.

The Ortlieb "hooks" for the panniers are looking like a slightly steeper investment than I first anticipated but I'm still leaning towards them.

You must have really old Ortliebs if they have QL1 hooks.

I think most people who have old Ortlieb panniers would have hooks like this, so they probably wouldn't know.

These fit racks with 16mm tubes such as the Tara and Duo.

According to SJS the hooks you linked are for racks with 10mm tubes so should be fine for your Cosmo and Nova. You'll just have to take the punt.

Thanks RonK :!:

Glad I asked as I'd not even spotted the mm sizing info.

I'd have considered taking a photo for confirmation as QL1 but with my photobucket account no longer working like it used to I wasn't sure what others were doing with regards pics.

G'day Rifraf,

I've just been speaking to Phil at Abbotsford Cycles in Melbourne regarding a better fit for QL2 mounts and hooks to my Duo racks.
He wasn't sure about my query but contacted the Ortlieb distributor and responded to me within half an hour.
They have an extensive Ortlieb range including small parts and the service is good.

Tie down straps from bunnings, with no stretch, and make sure to secure the ends.

Punt taken and order made tonight.
I know there was something else I meant to order but couldn't for the life of me remember what it was.

I'll look harder at this suggestion should the extra hooks prove insufficient.
Thanks for the contribution BenGr.

I added lower hooks to our roller classic bags with the QL2.1 system and love it. On the racks that it suits I also added te anti rub strips which also increases the fit.

A bit late, but the panniers already have one lower hook right?

If the top hooks are set well and on the ends / edges next to a pannier cross-bar, the bags slide nicely into space and won't move.

Instead of using rubber strips on the panniers, you can use self vulcanising rubber strips on the rack. This also protects the rack, especially nice when using Tubus steelracks, that can rust if the powder coating is rubbed off.
You adjust the thickness by wrapping more or less rubber on the rack.
I use it under the top hooks and all places where the panniers touch the rack. It protects and prevents rattling.

It can even look nicer than this, I left some bits of the old gaffa tape on the racks.

Given the vagaries of international postage, your items from SJS Cycles should be here?

A few days ago Rodger.

They forgot the packet of motivation which I thought was an included extra.

I've been a little busy and hope to find the necessary time this weekend.

I managed to find some time today adding the extra hooks to 6 panniers, with 2 being for my trailer.

I had time to do this and mount on the Nova rack, my front roller classics.

I'd run out of time at this stage and it appears at first glance that I'm going to be unable to utilise the extra clips on the front panniers.

Certainly the left hand side appears problematic, largely due to the 205mm front disk which hides access to the adjuster bolts of the clips.

I'll update on the rears when next I have some spare time to try them and have another look at the fronts.

I was tired and a little unwell and behind on other tasks so we won't know for a few days yet how much of a wasted exercise its been.
