List of Kids bike manufacturers

Postby MattyK » Thu Nov 29, 2012 10:48 am

Who are the specialist kids bike makers out there? That is, brands that identify themselves as making different products to the "big brands", and/or those that make bikes that claim to be better than the average. I'll set up another thread to discuss whether their virtues are real or imagined.

Specialist kids bike brands
ByK - Australian, range from toddler balance bikes to teens, urban and MTB styles

Islabikes - UK based, not much info in Aus, and don't ship here. balance bikes to adult, MTB urban and road/race

Fourty Bikes - 1 size model for 6-10 y.o. with single and 3-speed variants, and a track drop bar option.

manufacturers who do a "lightweight" range in addition to their generic fare:
Radius Bikes - Neo range claims lighter weight

XDS - Lite range, alloy framed

Feel free to add more and I will update this post if possible.

Puky - very German! No idea about availability/stockists The antithesis of lightweight kids' bikes, these appear to come with everything but a kitchen sink attached.

ByK appear to have added a 3-speed SRAM internal hub gear version of the E-450.
Yet to appear on their website but I have seen one in the flesh.

Frog Bikes - UK based/retailed only though. Interesting design on the smaller ones (small wheel with relatively higher seat than say a ByK), reasonably light, nice short cranks.

I hadn't come across these before:
Early Rider
The 16" Belter looks very nice; belt drive, lighter than most micro race BMXs. Cranks look way too long though...
The Alley Runner is a neat balance bike, comparable to a Likeabike Jumper but with even more bling (carbon bars!) and a little cheaper.

Trek does kids stuff. Much less hassle than the Kmart bike which weighed more than my Madone

Yes, nearly all the mainstream bike makers do a range of kids bikes, and most are moving in to the lighter alloy framed domain. Trek, Spesh, Avanti, Giant, etc. Most still conform to the traditional kids bike geometry (ie small wheels, upright position, high bars, short wheelbase) than say the stretched out ByK philosophy.

Almost noone publishes weights though, some of the frame design is questionable (Trek for example), and plastic adornment is prevalent.

I'm also curious about the world of micro race BMXs (Redline, GT, Avanti/ABD, DK, Haro, Insense, Kuwahara etc); geometrically they are very similar to ByKs (or is that vice versa?), but even lighter and better specced.

The weight of the average kids bike (even in the LBS) these days is astonishing - it's hard to work out how they actually manage to make them so heavy!

ByK now have an auto 2-speed version of their 18" bike. Pretty nifty.

And the 3-speed 20" has now become a listed model:

Still dreaming of the Belter though :)

Here are a couple of new bikes that look pretty good. I've seen the Avanti in the flesh and it looked very nice. The Fuji is available for order, but no one has them in store yet.

Avanti Blade Jr - 24" wheels, 21 speed flat bar, alloy frame, V brakes, twist shift. rrp. $489

Fuji Absolute 24 - 24" wheels, 7 speed, flat bar, alloy frame, dual pivot brakes, twist shift. rrp $499

Fuji Absolute 20 - 20" wheels, 7 speed, flat bar, alloy frame, dual pivot brakes, twist shift. rrp $475

LikeaBike AU has a range of German timber balance bikes but they also have the alloy framed Jumper balance bike with a rear suspension.

The Jumper is part of a much larger range from a German brand called Kokua which doesn't appear to have Oz representation.

Another German brand that does have local representation is Centurion (via Advanced Traders) and they too have a range of kids and youth bikes.
Ours is not to reason why...merely to point and giggle
