Nice rig! If he gets the hang of it, you won't need the training wheels.
(But equally, don't let me force that point on you. If he wants to try with trainers then go for it. Took my kids, especially my daughter, a while between balance bike and pedal bike riding. I was dead set against training wheels. Probably would have been faster progress with them...)
Noosa's a bit hilly right? Think about a next bike with 2 or 3 gears...

I think each kid is different. My daughter didn't take to the balance bike at all and ended up going the training wheels route. Took her a while but she's off them now.
