SYD - Ultegra 2012 crank - swap for equivalent Compact

Postby trailgumby » Wed Jun 12, 2013 10:03 pm

I've just picked up an 2012 Ultegra complete groupset off fleaBay with 172.5mm cranks and the normal 53/39 chainrings.Supposedly done about 2,000km.

Having just made the wrong side of a half-century I'd prefer a compact crankset. 172.5 or 175mm crank length is fine.

Best I've got is Tiagra, should your search be fruitless.

Why don't you just put a bigger cassette on the back? It's a lot cheaper.

You lose the benefit of a close ratio cassette. Compact crankset is a better option for maintaining cadence.

In my experience you only need close ratio at the bottom end. Once you jump above the 17t your usually heading up hill, riding solo or in a slow group. Close ratio cogs at the top end of the cassette just lead to cross chaining.
