Garmin Edge 500 vs 510
Postby casual_cyclist » Fri Apr 11, 2014 6:53 pm
http://www.highlytunedathletes.com.au/G ... Black.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
or a 510 head unit for $329
http://www.highlytunedathletes.com.au/G ... e-510.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Question is, is the 510 $140 better than the 500?
I really just want to record some rides and upload them to Strava and Garmin Connect. Not after anything fancy.
Thoughts?

500 is your answer.casual_cyclist wrote: I really just want to record some rides and upload them to Strava and Garmin Connect. Not after anything fancy.
But I've just upgraded to the 510 recently and for me the difference was worth it. 510s larger touch screen is a winner.

Thanks. I don't upload via phone so that is useful to know a feature I won't be needing.r11ss wrote:510 faster satellite acquisition and easy upload to Garmin connect via the phone. Also touch screen. I bought the 510, personal preference though.

I think so. I just wanted to check there wasn't something essential I am missing.black4tress wrote:500 is your answer.casual_cyclist wrote: I really just want to record some rides and upload them to Strava and Garmin Connect. Not after anything fancy.

Mate, if you are still thinking about it and haven't actually purchased the 500 then I would recommend just getting the 510, pay the extra....they'll be no what ifs......Get the newer one and don't look back.casual_cyclist wrote:Good to know. I am very happy with it does what I need it to do and it is more compact than the 510.casual_cyclist wrote:Good to know. More important... how is it? Happy?kx315 wrote:I went through this same process a few months ago.......the 500 won.
For the extra money I simply would not use all of the features on the 510.

Cheers. I really only want basic functionality, so I am very sure the 500 is for me.kx315 wrote:I am very happy with it does what I need it to do and it is more compact than the 510.casual_cyclist wrote:Good to know. - it will lose all its satellites, which can only be fixed by restarting. If this happens mid ride and you don't notice for a bit you'll be really annoyed. So I now show GPS accuracy on my main screen
- the battery was not calibrated when I got it, so it always showed 100% even after a 7 hour ride. Need to run down and flatten and then recharge to get calibration OK
- sometimes the date for the data points in totally bogus, so one ride said I took 20 years to complete
Would I buy again, yes!

Good tips. Thanks! I have ordered a 500 so this is great to know.Six13 wrote:I have the 500 and it works well, most of the time. A few things I've noticed:

I like it. It means I don't publish my address on stravalobstermash wrote:I'm still trying to decide... One of the things that turns me off the 500 is reported slow satellite acquisition, whereas most people with a 510 claim it's almost instant. Slow satellite lock is one of the major factors in my current smartphone/Strava hiatus.

I bought a 510 due to reported slowness of gps lock on 500. Coming out of the basement of a 9 storey building I get lock pretty much instantly with the 510.

Cheers. I gotta do that. In any case, I'm concerned about getting a super quick satellite lock.GaryJ wrote:CC, in the Strava options on the site you can set up privacy zones if you're worried about that.

One thing to note... if a ride goes into a zone and then back out, this will be viewable publicly. What it means is that lets say you leave home, get outside the zone, realise you forgot something, return home collect it and then go back out, the Strava trace will show you stationary at your home while you collected the item.

I didn't bother so I don't know. You could email and ask the question or call one of the stores?lobstermash wrote:Just a question re 99bikes, if you join the club ($5), do you get the discount code for $10 off the first purchase sent to you pretty much straight away? I'm probably going to grab a 510 bundle from them.
