Garmin 810-turning off by itself

Postby andrich » Fri Jan 06, 2017 5:52 pm

Hi guys,
i was hoping for some help with my 810.

For about the last month it has turned itself off 4 times mid riding. One minute its going fine, the next i look down and its off. It also doesnt auto-save so i basically lose the first part of my ride.
Can anyone shed some light on why this might be happening?
Battery is always charged.
I have read that it can be a loose battery contact or something to do with the software update (Currently running 5.10) but i am not sure

If anyone has had the same issue and worked it out i would love to hear it
thanks in advance
Michael

i would start by backing up everything.
manually deleting anything on the device and then doing a hard reset and a reformat the SD card if you have one.

My 800 was doing similar, then I found that it was set by default to turn off after so many minutes ... about half way into my ride.

I'm sure you have checked for that.

Not in direct relation: I also own an Etrex 30 and a known issue model wide is for it to just turn off on it's own accord. No update, resetting or battery change will change it.

I've had the same problem multiple times, seemingly completely at random, riding along, look down and the Garmin's turned itself off. Restart, I can see my ride details (time, distance, elevation etc) but there is no underlying GPS data so Garmin Connect and Strava can't do anything with the ride. I think it's GPS signal related but I don't exactly know what causes it, could be loss of GPS signal perhaps. It is incredibly annoying though and I've lost some data from some big rides as a result.

My Edge 510 drove me batty with this sort of behaviour. I’d decided that it was on its last chance and the next time it switched off mid-ride, it would find itself under the wheels of the nearest truck.

I found that riding with BlueTooth turned off on the bike computer fixed it completely. More than 50 trouble free rides in a row now. The strange thing is that I never use live update or anything that needs bluetooth anyway.

The Edge 810 firmware is currently 6.30.
Don't hold your breath. Garmin updates don't usually fix anything.
Luckily for me my 810 has worked fine since purchase in 2015, unlike other models I own.
The 520 is nearly ready for the truck crush fix.

Garmin units were known to turn themselves off due to the battery contacts loosing touch with vibrations. Putting soft rubber behind the spring contacts reduced the problem. Check that the battery compartment spring contacts have black rubber strips be hind them .. and may be put some thin cardboard there too to increase the pressure. This is going back some years .. I'd think they'd have it sorted by now...

^^^

The 810 has a built-in battery. It can't be accessed without dismantling the unit.
