Garmin v Wahoo

Postby novice_101 » Fri Nov 16, 2018 1:00 pm

Going to buy my first GPS computer...tossing up between a Garmin and a Wahoo. Most likely, due to budget, will be Garmin 520 vs. Wahoo Element/Wahoo Element Bolt

Anyone have any idea which is better, pros and cons, experience with both, prefer one over the other etc? I'm leaning towards the Garmin due to it being a colour screen, but do you spend much time looking at the maps really ? Or would you be more focused on speed, cadence, distance, which means colour doesn't really matter??

With the Wahoo, I like the fact it can all be set up with an app on your phone, I've heard Garmin set ups are a little more 'clunky' I guess?
With either one, I'll be hoping to get a full set - cadence, heart rate etc etc

Any advice ?

Mostly you don't look at your cycle computer at all.

Typically, Wahoo users are people who have had a disappointing experience owning Garmin. There are an awful lot of them.

If you want a computer that is easy to set up and issue-free there is only one choice - Wahoo.

hmmmm fair point, Wahoo was actually winning until my colour debate in my head, but I guess it's true, I should be looking at the road etc. mostly

I've not had a colour Garmin so can't comment on that but the reason I switched from a Garmin 500 to the Element Bolt is the ability to have nice large figures on the display that I can read without reading glasses. I don't use maps on it (I'd use my phone if I needed to navigate) and just use one or two screens of info while riding; colour wouldn't add anything to this.

Long time Garmin user and switched to Bolt 6+ months ago.

MUCH better. Simple as that.

I've been and bought the Wahoo :)

Guy in the bike shop says he uses one himself and it's awesome! I've had my first hit out at the weekend with it, love it so far! Now just need to work on my fitness and figure out cadence, heart rate zones etc.

+1 to that.

I'd even think about getting an Elemnt when they update it, as the Bolt is a tad small for my failing eyes when using the route navigation. But that's the ONLY complaint.

Ya, I haven't bothered with a map yet, as it was a route I just normally take. Will see what the map is like when I'm next out with the club and download the route they post in advance. The rest of the display is great though, and the cadence sensor is a great addition for me, realised how much effort I was wasting!

Long time Garmin user until my 500 started doing weird things, dates, not transferring to Garmin Connect. Long story short purchased a Wahoo Eleymnt bold (red). Wow what a difference, user friendly and for my failing eyesight what a god send. Garmin never again. Wahoo simply the bees knees.
