I dunno why you're so surprised - Garmin has a history of doing just this. See my previous post.
So true as a past 705 and now 800 user I have learnt two things with garmin.

Never buy the product in it first 6 months of release
Never do the firmware update till the forums say its stable

Oh so true! I just updated the FW on my 500 to the newer version and promptly pretty much bricked it. It went into an eternal loop applying the update and failing. Only by deleting the upgrade files was I able to use the device again.

I'm on v3.0 and the failing FW upgrade is v3.20

I suppose that is the benefit of buying a 'mature' product, but still, I would have expected more from Garmin (especially with their premium price tag).
The Garmin 500 was similar, it took multiple FW revisions to get it to its current state

Hello
I buy a Garmin edge 510 (firmware 2.50) a few days and i note a bug, grade% go up and down on a flat ride (ex: -5% > 3% > 0% > -3% > 8%), it´s so inaccurate.
It´s a software or a hardware problem?
Any solution for this?

agree

installed Garmin Connect 1.1 a few hours ago and bluetooth appears to be behaving very well.

for anyone who wants to upload activities automatically to Strava via bluetooth, this explains how
http://a.wholelottanothing.org/2013/03/ ... e-510.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
though the lag appears more like half to a full hour rather than a few minutes as this article suggests.

don't know if the 500 had it, but one of my favorite 510 features is the security leash!!!
I've seen a mate's 500 fall off when he went over really rough road.
I'd hazard a guess it'd successfully hinder the head unit from being flogged by a thieving passer by.

after a few more days operation, all sensors appear to be stably monitored. GPS is picked up quick.

the thing I want to muck around with is having the backlight off. I've had it on a low setting since the first day as having it off was too dark.
then I'd like to explore battery range systematically....and check Calorie expenditure accuracy. The 500's estimates were total fantasy. The 800s were pretty accurate imv.

i've run it simultaneously with android strava app, bontrager Node 1.1, and all devices agree well re speed distance.

Well, another major glitch today!!!!!

My Edge 510 unfortunately died today after being run over by a car.... I was riding along at about 40kmhr when I ran over a bump (a drain cover on a sealed road), and heard a crack, and when I looked down my garmin (in its protective silicon case) was gone. As I pulled up at the side of the road to go back and retrieve it, it got run over by a car! Them's the breaks I guess.

On closer inspection, it appears that when I hit the bump, one of the retaining lugs broke in the mount, allowing the Edge to fly out. As you can see the retaining lug is still located in my mount! Interestingly, the 510 still recorded my trip home, making all the usual noises etc. The screen is unusable however so I am unable to save the ride.

Will lodge an RMA with Garmin and see what they say.

Anyone else had problems with the mounting lugs breaking? I know this was an issue with the 500s, so I guess its more of an issue now given the 510 is bigger and heavier.

That's very bad news. I hope they do the right thing and replace it for you.

Confirms my appreciation for the security leash.

Yeah good point, might pay to run it... Although I'd still have an unmountable, and hence, unusable device if I had...

When I saw how big the 510 was, I thought it would be a lot more prone to breaking the mount when riding rough roads.
Sorry to hear yours did. Will be interested to hear Garmin's response.

I've never had my 500 come free of its mount. I've hit speed bumps hard enough to lose my water bottle and rear light but never the garmin.

Any one know how downgrade the firmware?
I try the same process used on edge 500 but didn't work on edge 510

I just wish there was a hole to do that for the 810's... Might have to get a bit of glue and fashion one up...

Yep agree with that. Before this firmware upgrade I had never had an issue with ANT sensor drop out or the phone connection dropping out - both seem to be happening at least once per session.

I have had the same issues since upgrading the software to 2.7, sent Garmin an email and waiting a response. Hoping it can be fixed soon.

Waiting for a reasonable update. I'm still running the original software as I don't have any issues with it for what I do. The only thing I notice is the altitude issue, but it doesn't worry me as I don't use it as a factor for the riding I do. I get 30-40m altitude change while riding around the local velo.

Is it worthwhile to upgrade the software, or if I'm happy should I just stay with the original until a few more things are sorted?

I had not upgraded until 2.7, and 2.7 was a pain in the ass. Had to do a factory reset to even get it to see my iPhone again..
Won't be doing another one for a while that is for sure...
Love the 510 in general; just don't need the hassle of crap software update procedures...
Loving my Merida's and working towards adding a Pinarello to the stable... Go go go...
