A feature not yet mentioned I believe is LiveTrack. It allows friends/family to tracking your performance in realtime which you are training or racing. That is all I know - and assume that it means pairing with the smart-phone to deliver data. It would be interestingt to know the Aussie price. In the US it is $599 or $699 with the HRM3 and cadence / speed sensor.

I also picked up on the light sensor to adjust the brightness to better suit light conditions but don't know if that solves the Edge 810 "dull screen" mentioned in this thread.

I put up a news announcement, with most things mentioned here covered.

The 510 and 810 both have livetrack but frankly, the basic upload via Bluetooth is so flakey I wouldn't even bother trying it.

Get a pebble smart watch it pairs with your phone and gives txt emails and call notifications. There are also a gazillion apps that work with it. Cycle apps as well. $160 from dick smith or $150 online if you are prepared to wait 6 weeks

Yep... that's the thing isn't it? You can get very good hardware options like the Pebble, and I'm guessing that you could potentially do running/triathlon stuff with them as well. Garmin charges a LOT for the 910XT. The main drawbacks are GPS signal quality on the phone, and if you aren't a KOM hunter you might not care that much about that. You have to buy a phone and carry it for most of the "wizbang" Garmin features... I assume that most of Garmin's market research has told them "I do not want another phone"?

The live track has been mentioned, plus it isn't news, it has been around since the introduction of the 510/810 over a year ago.

Plus as others have hinted, the uptake on this feature has been poor. It seemed like it was a nice to have feature but rather than the user seeing it as a safety feature or a "my loved one cares and wants to follow me", it became more of a impost. Riders got on their bikes to get a moment away from the pressure of home life work etc and didn't see a need in family tracing their every movement.

Add in the mix that as mentioned by others, that tracking can already be done using other phone apps etc. End result is that we see a very small single digit percentage of people using this on the 510/810.

What could potentially be a nice feature of the Edge 1000 is that you have a group of friends all riding together and they get separated for whatever reason, (be it due to racing or traffic lights etc), if everyone has a Edge 1000 and live tracking turned on then they will be able to see exactly where each other are. Great for a race within a race, or group camaraderie etc.

Down side is that everyone (2 or more) need to have an Edge 510/810/1000 AND be on the Live Tracking. Add in again that someone will almost certainly say you can do that already with XYZ app on your phone, hence I think this feature therefore will still fall into the "nice to have" catagory, but reality is, probably wont be used greatly.

Original Post has a link, however AU price is $699 for naked unit, $799 for bundle. Early adopters get a Free Remote.

This improved brightness and larger screen real estate of the Edge 1000 is its first most powerful selling point, as discussed a couple of posts back. So YES, it solves the Edge 800/810 "dull screen".

The Edge 810 was like a +version (GoPro hero 3 to GoPro Hero 3+, or iphone 5, iphone 5c). It was only ever a minor update. The Edge 1000 is more like a GoPro Hero 4 or iPhone 6.
A major update (like it or love it !)

I picked mine up yesterday...

Got to say that I am 50:50 on taking it back today. Sure is shiny and stuff but the software feels buggy and it is missing one feature that is a deal breaker for me... They have dropped the "bikes" feature - it's just not there... So I can't easily switch between my MTB and road bike. I particularly liked that feature as it made it easy to track total km travelled on each bike.

I am certainly disappointed.

I will give it a break, reset it, and try getting it to sync properly again (flaky Bluetooth).

I will also drop garmin a line to see if they intend to put the bikes feature back in. If not, I am likely to give it back.

It certainly is huge. It almost looks ridiculous out front. Curiously, the out front mount is still the same length as the one for the 510, even though the device is much taller. I ended up taking the k-edge mount off my MTB because it is 15mm taller than the garmin one. Without it, I could not fit the garmin out front and my phone on the stem.

It definitely boots up quicker an the touch screen is more responsive than my 510. All the training pages are basically the same; so that was easy to setup and use.

It recognized my existing sensors and power meter, so that part was fine.

Setting the time did my head in though... You just can't... Apparently you need to go outside and let the gps sync up... Bit of a mind twist when you are inside on a Friday night trying to set it up with you bike and laptop etc...

All up, right now, I would recommend people hold on to their money until real users work through the "early adopter" issues...

In the end, I rode with my 510 today instead of the 1000, so I think that pretty much speaks for itself...

Oh, and the larger screen doesn't buy you anything on the training pages... Max items is still 10. You just get bigger numbers...

Still no reply from garmin on fixing the issues I am having. Boxing it up this weekend and will take it back to the store... Perhaps if it lands on their lap as a refund they might take fixing it more seriously...

Garmins determination to stay out of the social media side of things has me wondering whether STRAVA themselves should enter the sports GPS market?

Their what? It seems pretty clear to me that they have decided to compete on the social media front and thus not support anything that makes it simpler to interface with social media front runners like strava.

Spot on.

Garmin is a hardware company and Strava is a software company. Garmin needs to play ball with standards more than Strava does. It's just a matter of time before Strava partners with a Taiwan GPS company which would out Garmin in an awkward position. Garmin's lack of innovation is really showing, they've had the market cornered for far too long. Perhaps Strava will stay hardware agnostic, there is a lot of money to be made in software alone, and now that they're selling our ride data (Strava Metro) perhaps they'll ignore the hardware game all together. I think Garmin might actually sell more units if they were natively Strava compatible. Garmin Connect failed to capture the market, they need to accept that.

Makes sense. If that were the case people would be like..."I want to use Strava"..."Get a garmin then".

Absolutely! I want a Strava compatible device that is water resistant, has excellent battery life, and is NOT a smartphone.

Nice to see they're actually using the colour screen with proper colour. I wish they'd give us 5/810 users the option to use colour more - those 1000 icons look really nice. Why did they bother going with a colour screen for the 510 when there's no useful functionality that makes use of it?

I saw one at a LBS in the city yesterday. Was priced at $799, and I assumed it was for the premium pack (HRM & Cadence), but I wasnt too sure (could only see the front of the box and didnt detail what was included). Thanks for confirming.

Garmin customer service on the heart rate monitors is very poor also. One of the blokes I ride with has problems and contacted them. They sent him a new belt/strap whatever you wont to call them and it worked for one day. He rang again and they said, the problem has been fixed with these new ones, wrong. They weren't interested in doing anything about it, so he went and bought a Polar strap (I think that was the one) for $20 and it works perfectly, Garmin was $80.

What? No multiple bikes feature?? That's ridiculous, the multiple bikes feature (and multiple activities) from the home page was Major winner for me upgrading to a 510 from the 500.

I have 4 bikes, all with different sensors etc and the selection at the start and choosing an activity to suit was a godsend.

Oh and I use Livetrack all the time, no issues, good to know my wife can see if I'm late and on my own in the bush

Instead of bikes you now simply swipe down and choose the sensors you need for the bike you are using. They have 3 ride options to choose from and you can set each option with multiple data pages. I find it much better. Particularly with setting up indoor, outdoor and MTB profiles.

Also anyone paying more than $650 for a bundle isn't looking hard enough, my LBS matched the price and had it over night shipped ready to pick up the next day :)

cool, thanks
my 6 year old edge 705 is on its last legs (struggling to turn on, half the buttons dont work) so i am trying to decide what to buy next when it evenually wont turn on at all.
Have been happy with the 705, 10 hrs per week use (avg) over 6 years is pretty good value IMO. Hope the next one i get lasts as long

Not quite.
The satellite connection is way, way, way quicker on the 510, as is the start-up, and connection/download to computer.

Bluetooth Functionality: In my experience, this is basically useless.  The connectivity constantly drops between my phone (iPhone 5S) and the unit.  As a result, core Edge 1000 functionality such as text message alerts don’t work reliably.  Neither does Live Tracking.  Ultimately, one of the biggest reasons to buy the unit (call notifications & text message alerts) has been nullified.
