Garmin Edge 1000
Postby RobGrinter » Thu Apr 10, 2014 9:36 am
Some neat new riding trip options, new landscape mode, live tracking of friends in your group, great for racing in your own group with leader-board pages. Also a nice remote control to give you a more hands off screen quick lap or screen change option.
With a 3" screen it is a lot wider and longer than the Edge 800/810, however it is also about 30% slimmer.
New Speed & Cadence sensors give up the need for magnets and hence require less maintenance and potential for drop-outs.
Smartphone connectivity with Alerts will help you to keep your phone tucked away for the whole ride.
All up looks like it will be the new standard in Cycle Computers. Not intended to replace the Edge 810, however with the small difference in price between the two, I cannot see many going for the older Edge 800 series option.

MehMajor features:
- New larger high resolution full color screen
- Addition of Shimano Di2 gearing information
Say What!?!?!- Incoming Call and Text notifications
Meh.- Garmin Segment Real-Time Challenges (on device)
- WiFi added to device, full Bluetooth 4.0 chipset
OSM FTW (and bank balance)!- Full and detailed maps included now
Depends on how it works, might be useful. Might also direct youdown scary main roads and motorways....?- Added round trip routes (basically a ‘give me a surprise route’ option)
May be useful. Certainly apparently more useful than the "major features". 10 data fields would be nice.Minor Features:
- Ability to change display to a horizontal orientation
- Downloads satellite data ahead of time to speed acquisition to a few seconds
- Increases data fields to 10 fields per page, up to custom 5 pages (+ lap summary, compass page, map pages)
Meh. This is what a PC is for.- Ability to edit saved workouts on the device itself
- Added training calendar support (for scheduled workouts)
- Added support for displaying PR’s in a menu
No compelling reason to upgrade from an 800. Length would be a pain when it comes to mounting with Ayups. Micro usb is a plus though (micro usb is designed to be plugged in and out a lot. Mini usb is not), although the plug does not seem to be so well positioned (compared to 800) for charging on the fly on longer rides (anything >= ~250km) - a bit of guess work there.

More resolution is nice but what I'd really like is something a bit more open or with hacked firmware. Not really Garmin's direction though...

When passed around here against the Edge 810, the question is not about the size so much. Everyone agrees that the 1000 is bigger in height and width and is balanced out by the thickness and agrees that the screen real estate may well be useful, but the size of Edge 800/810 was OK anyway.
What is discussed is will the Edge 1000 overcome the dullness of the Edge 800 screen and further the lack of it being addressed in the Edge 810. To not fix it in the 810 was the largest disappointment. In sunlight, these 800/810 units can be painful.
However we suspect based on the G8 Golf screen being the same as the Edge 1000, If you are even remotely sight challenged then you will no doubt appreciate the size of the screen combined with the higher resolution and brightness in daylight, on that score it is way way better.
In one sentence, the screen real estate, graphics, vibrancy and brightness is a huge improvement. It is what the 810 should always have been, but wasnt !

I'll try to ignore this new one and save the bank balance.
I'm waiting to see the uproar of the segments feature.

Need to encourage 'everyone' to get one of these new bits of gear, so there are more of the perfectly good ones (800-810) in the used marketplace. Not that I'm not happy with my newlyy purchased 2nd hand 705!g-boaf wrote:My Edge 800 still does the job. I've not even upgraded the firmware from new. If it isn't broken...

- map screens too small and cluttered
- route usually indistinguishable from the clutter on the screen
- heart rate monitor is a random number generator with mean approximately equal to actual heart rate and standard deviation of 15 bpm
- cadence sensor produces frequent spikes of ridiculous numbers
Garmin make moderately entertaining toys but, when I am doing serious rides, I use a cheap basic Polar heart rate monitor and an antique Cateye bike computer.

I got the solution to that now. I keep my phone in a Relevate Gas Tank Bag. So I don't see a need to upgrade my 810 to a 1000 for that feature, and I don't need a bigger screen. Now if they had released the 1000 when they did the 810 I may have gone the 1000, but not now. I'll keep this for a few years then upgrade if I want to.HAKS wrote:I like the SMS/Call notification bit. eg. "I just bought an iPhone 4 and its working fine, so the new iPhone 5 model wont do anything for me, I will wait for the iPhone 6".
Helps to justify ones expensive outlay.
Totally agree with your analogy, however it appears to me that this Edge 1000 is significantly better and there is little reason to buy an Edge 810 whilst this is out. If the 810 drops in price significantly, then it may have a place still.
BTW, the Edge 500 is still a ripper model, best release ever and at $189, is huge bang for buck.

It's somewhat ironic that the delayed release of the SRM PC8 is a serious constraint IMO to the overall story. It's also hell expensive, but the PC7 is just way too short on features. The competition stops being just GPS once you ask for 700 bucks... we have to stop and think "what do I actually need this for?" once the price gets high enough. I would hope people would consider power meters, or carbon SMPs, because a Garmin is just a GPS, and it's not even the best option for some tasks. Who uses an Edge in the pro peloton? Who uses the PC7?
If they can't get a mobile happening, or be a PC8 replacement (this won't be), then they should be shrinking and lightening the Edge 500. I totally see the value in this (compared to an 810) but the $$ signs without much in the way of "must have" featureset, that can't be copied with an iPhone, is making me think Emperor's New Clothes
Edit: after a sleep, I am now resolved by this one key point. The edge series can be defined by what it CAN'T do, rather than what it can, or could do, at this point in time. It's reasonable to think it should have seamless Strava integration, it should actively tell you about the SMS details etc, it should be BT ready right now, should have suffer fest integration, WKO integration, even better power metrics like 5 minute normalised power, one hour power, integrated FTP tests in the workouts, tell you who was the fastest on a segment for the ride at the coffee shop instead of at home after the upload, and the ability to truly customise the menu. I want my 30s power to be taking up half my screen! Custom lap functions too. I ride to the race, then ride home the long way, I want my 130kms in one file, but I need the average power/hr of my 4 lap race to be visible in real time, and not combined with the ride to the race. Easy to achieve splitting the files, but Strava hurts you when you do that. It should have all the running data available as well.
I think saving a file in the background as a backup for a crash would be reasonable at 600 bucks too.
Methinks they just aren't imagining the possibilities or they just don't ride enough and do enough market research. What I am asking for is high end use, true. But it's a high end product.

I find the 500 the perfect size. The 800 and 810 were already too big. The 510 was starting to push it on size for me too.
May as well stick an iPad on your bars.

You can do this with laps and garmin connect. The reason why strava cannot do this is because Garmin doesn't release all the specs of their fit format, apparently.Xplora wrote:I want my 130kms in one file, but I need the average power/hr of my 4 lap race to be visible in real time, and not combined with the ride to the race.

Ride to race 20km - av power
Race lap 1>>
Race lap 2>> av power for each lap, and for the race as a whole, excluding the first 20km
Race lap 3>>
Race lap 4>>
Ride home 60kms >> av power
This has enormous potential, if you wanted to check an average power over a climb, you hit the lap button, and then can regroup for the next climb, ensuring you don't blow up. The key is that you might want to be able to exclude a large chunk of ride beforehand, because my 180W to the start of the climb isn't much of a concern compared to the 350W x 10 minutes four times up the hill (or doing hill repeats). If you consider the normality of a warm up, then several discrete work intervals, then cool down, what I'm talking about makes sense. I am guessing this wouldn't be crazy hard to implement, as long as you let the rider create laps and sublaps. With a touchscreen, not so hard. Wouldn't try and do it with a 500 though.
Like I said... cyclists actually want that data if they are training or racing. You can't get it from a PC7.
