If they can't see something like BT compatibility when that's one of the main drawcards for the Edge 1000, then they don't deserve your business. I think you're being too kind.Le Mong wrote:This has already been admitted by garmin and is being worked on. Crap that it wasn't caught in the development phase but what can you do. I'm waiting for android compatibility.
I picked up a used 800 (I typically am 2 generations behind on most technology curves, about 3 years most of the time) and it does everything I need it to, and more. I wouldn't mind the GLONASS implementation or the call alerts, but unless I've got a BT headset I'm not taking a call anyway. They don't work so good at 30kmh anyway
I'm honestly rather confused by the whole thing - I think Garmin needs to do their market research more, and work on putting better processors and better features to future proof their devices. Once they improve their software (for example, they improved power meter support enormously a while back) then the devices need to be able to adapt to that. I think they just aren't using their brains sometimes. I would have liked my 800 to show "pace", because I can dig my 800 out of my pocket on a jog quite easily, and I don't feel it's "so much harder" than looking at a wristwatch that the enormous cost penalty of the wristwatch is worth it to me, an occasional jogger and regular rider.
Easy to implement. The desire needs to be there though. I wonder if Garmin is about people, or about products. Bit zen, but what can you do?

Hopefully they will fix it or the next model and I can purchase then.
If not, then I guess I will have to go back to market and see what the competitors offer.
In the meantime, my 510 is rocking on...

I've looked at the 1000, and the lack of the bike based odometer I think is a killer for me. It doesn't look like it's going to be coming any time soon - if every either.
So, I'm swinging back to getting an 810. The only possible reasons I can think of...
1. Better integration with Garmin Vector pedals, including this neat stuff
https://www.cyclinganalytics.com/blog/2 ... smoothness
2. 8 bike memory!

Good question. It specifically says only 510/810 in the article linked above. I can confirm that other than pedal balance it does NOT show the effectiveness stuff with either 500 or 800.Xplora wrote:Comedian, are you sure the 800 doesn't do the smoothness etc????
There are some other things that appear to be specific to the newer models. Things like seeing battery levels, being able to set crank length. I was thinking this was also related.
On garmin connect it does show power balance though as does CA. Just not that crazy cool pedal effectiveness stuff.

No the device has an overall odometer, but no bike based odometer. So, tracking the number of k's you've done on a particular bike has to be done with something like strava by setting the bike on import.harmonix1234 wrote:No odometer in the 1000? That can't be right. Can it?

From DC Rainmakers vector review.
Correct, there are no plans to bring Pedal Smoothness or Torque Effectiveness to the Edge 800 (keeping in mind that Vector doesn't yet support them, even though the Edge 810 does).

Pedal smoothness is something you're really unlikely to "NEED" in realtime - I am guessing you can still download the data and analyse it afterwards? I certainly wouldn't be getting a new head unit over that.

Nope, the saved FIT files don't include it. If you have an Android phone (with ANT chipset enabled) or ANT dongle you could record it.Xplora wrote:We've triggered something in the forum software

Can someone please confirm if the 1000 has the sunlight readable screen just like the Oregon 600 and GPSMAP 62s - you are able to read the screen in bright daylight with the backlight totally off!RobGrinter wrote:Whilst we haven't seen a Edge 1000 yet here in AU, I can say we have in our possession the new Garmin G8 Golf (new product as of last week), which is precisely the same housing and form factor as the Edge 1000 (less the twist mount on the rear) .
When passed around here against the Edge 810, the question is not about the size so much. Everyone agrees that the 1000 is bigger in height and width and is balanced out by the thickness and agrees that the screen real estate may well be useful, but the size of Edge 800/810 was OK anyway.
What is discussed is will the Edge 1000 overcome the dullness of the Edge 800 screen and further the lack of it being addressed in the Edge 810. To not fix it in the 810 was the largest disappointment. In sunlight, these 800/810 units can be painful.
However we suspect based on the G8 Golf screen being the same as the Edge 1000, If you are even remotely sight challenged then you will no doubt appreciate the size of the screen combined with the higher resolution and brightness in daylight, on that score it is way way better.
In one sentence, the screen real estate, graphics, vibrancy and brightness is a huge improvement. It is what the 810 should always have been, but wasnt !
I have the GPSMAP 62s - it's heavy though - it is 222gms with batteries. The 1000 would halved that weight.

Having seen one recently I am seriously unimpressed. The screen is alot like most phone screens which means that in sunlight it is near impossible to see and every time you drip sweet on it the screen reacts by undertaking some sort of action depending on where the drip lands. Add to this when you try and wipe it off the screen keeps reacting.Machoman121 wrote:Can someone please confirm if the 1000 has the sunlight readable screen just like the Oregon 600 and GPSMAP 62s - you are able to read the screen in bright daylight with the backlight totally off!RobGrinter wrote:Whilst we haven't seen a Edge 1000 yet here in AU, I can say we have in our possession the new Garmin G8 Golf (new product as of last week), which is precisely the same housing and form factor as the Edge 1000 (less the twist mount on the rear) .

The battery is no where near as good as the 810 either.

So it's a pity there are no real sun light readable GPS for the bikes yet. I just might have to take the hit in the additional weight of the GPSMAP 62s i guess.

You'd have to be blind if you can't view the screen in sunlight, I honestly don't get how some are saying you can not view the screen in daylight, I have owned and still own many handheld GPS units including Garmin Oregon units, my edge 1000 is the most viewable of any GPS units I have ever owned.biker jk wrote:jcjordan says "near impossible to see" in sunlight. I don't know what background settings mine is on, I just leave mine on the default, what ever that is. 3 to 4 hours bike riding I use up apx 25 to 30℅ of the battery capacity.
