Garmin Edge 820 ?
Postby Leethal » Tue Jul 12, 2016 9:50 am
I have an aging Garmin 800, so have been waiting for the Edge 820 to weigh up against the Wahoo Elemnt. Most important to me is decent mapping/navigation as I like to ride new terrain often.
Although seems main selling point for both units is connecting with others during rides, which isn't really my thing. I'm sure a lot of us ride to disconnect from the world!

Looks like a great balance between size and functionality.

On the other hand, it looks like you need to have bluetooth on and running the whole time, which is a major batter drain, not to mention the data load on Garmin Connect.

Not an issue with my Edge 520 that I have noted.nezumi wrote:....

Saw one of them briefly. My old 800 is fortunately still working okay, but the power button is dodgy. As long as it keeps going, I'll be happy to avoid upgrading. Maybe I can find an 810 cheap...Leethal wrote:It appears all videos of the Garmin 820 (youtube/vimeo etc) have been removed from the web. Hope all those interested saw it yesterday.

Garmin AU: Edge 820 = AU$650 and Edge bundle = AU$799
USD to AUD is only 1.3x, do Aussie distributors have to be so greedy!

There is nothing to weigh up - the Wahoo Elemnt does not offer mapping/navigation.Leethal wrote:...have been waiting for the Edge 820 to weigh up against the Wahoo Elemnt. Most important to me is decent mapping/navigation as I like to ride new terrain often.

Caution - I suspect those prices only include the basemap.Leethal wrote:Garmin US: Edge 820 = US$399 and Edge bundle = US$499

Not quite to Garmin level, but it's getting there: http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2016/06/turn ... lemnt.htmlRonK wrote:There is nothing to weigh up - the Wahoo Elemnt does not offer mapping/navigation.Leethal wrote:...have been waiting for the Edge 820 to weigh up against the Wahoo Elemnt. OpenStreet maps etc, and I prefer the colour scheme for navigation (on my Edge 800) to the Garmin maps:RonK wrote:Caution - I suspect those prices only include the basemap.Leethal wrote:Garmin US: Edge 820 = US$399 and Edge bundle = US$499

Yeah, both Elemnt and Edge 820 are expensive, but no moreso than anything else cycling related I guess. I'm not wrapped with screen contrast of my Edge 800 during day, and I use maps/navigation a lot, although the unit has only ever dropped one ride over the many years I've owned it. I'm a bit worried the the screen size of the edge 820 might be a touch small for navigation without seeing one first.
The Element seems interesting, albeit large/ugly, and software/device connections are a not complete as yet. I was hoping to buy a new cycle computer prior to heading to Europe in August (I'd want to test for a least a week), but think I'll have to wait until I return to see where prices stabilize and bugs for both are ironed out...

Any of you guys tried the Elemnt in person? Display seems easier to read in sunlight too.

I bought it in Ribblecycles, they had a voucher of 50$ if you spend more than 500$ and it was 514$, so it was 464$ and free shipping.
It comes with the handlebar mount/support and two mounts with elastic bands.
I'm trying to download the maps like : http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2013/05/down ... 00810.html
should i copy them directly to the garmin folder with the gmapsupp.img ?
should i use the basecamp application?

I would copy the gmapsupp.img file to the Garmin folder. That's what I do with my Edge 800. You'll have to select this map to be the default as well, I would presume.hez wrote:I've received today my new Garmin Edge 820!
