sora gruppo??????
Postby Z1 » Wed Feb 18, 2009 1:08 am
anyone got any feedback on the sora gruppo considering it for a eight speed set up on an old peugeot frame currently running original specs looking for a affordable easy maintained groupset primarily shifters deraillers and crankset.

imo, the sora gruppo would be fine for what u state u need it for. i recently upgraded to Ultegra from a sora/tiagra mix, which i ran for about 12 months hard use, and never had a problem at all. and u know if something does go wrong, its cheap as chips to replace.

My bike has Sora shifters and deraillers. I've never had a problem with their operation. However recently as my flexibility has improved, I'm going for the drops more often (before I only rode on the hoods). This has shown up a limitation in the Sora shifters as they are designed to be used only on the hoods.

its a peugeot Ventoux in red i'm guessing its an '85 or '86. have just put a set of shimano r500 wheels on replacing the weinneman rims that were on it. the brake levers are just a tektro set replacing the dia compe ones. friction shifters moving "sachs and hurret" deraillers. the rear one is also marked 'rival'. cranks are stronglite 175mm running a 52-39 chain rings i beleive. brakes are the weinneman 570 top swings. seat is a serfas gel thingo which looks harsh but is pretty comfortable.

I have the Sora 8 speed you are thinking of getting. I am trying to justify upgrading to Ultegra by trying to smash it to bits but so far it has withstood my abuse for close to a year. Its two main disadvantages are:
1. Heaviest of all Shimano gruppos
2. The "Campy" Sora's thumbshifters are farther out front so upshifting to a high gear on the drops is like trying to reach Shaq's head. If you have a 7 inch thumb it should be fine but most of us do not so you have to twist your hand inwards to be able to push the shifter.
Other than that surprisingly it shifts mighty fine.
At first I thought the shifting might be crap but its is not so. I guess its all about the bike mechanics' set up.

tiagra has similar paddle shifters with 105, Ultegra and Dura Ace. Its the feature that eliminates the problem shifting on the drops. if you can get Tiagra, get it for the Shifters.Z1 wrote:ok.... i have a 2003 sora rear mech on another bike currently and it seems to shift smoothly and its actually on a mountain bike so it is pretty tough and low maintenance. is there much difference between sora shifters and tiagra?????
