Swapping out my handlebars

Postby Gunlock » Sat Oct 31, 2009 10:31 pm

Evening all.

As some of you have seen, i recently bought an MS Oppy C6. Amazing bike, but i cant help but feel the handlebars are a little too wide for me.

Given that the bike is sub 1 month old, what are the odds my LBS will charge me to swap it out for something not quite so wide? Of course, the bike has never been crashed and the bars are in pristine condition.

Totally depends on the people at the bike shop, I would say they might do the labour part of the swap for free, but they may say that they cannot sell those handlebars as new so would need to charge for new bars.

I'd say not much chance - its an off the rack bike, not a "custom build"

They would have little chance of reselling your "old" bars and they'd have to pay for the replacements.

Cost you nothing to ask them the question.

Just say that you've been riding it for a short while and you're wondering if they can arrange some sort of OEM part-swap. Most bike shops will make adjustments or customisations at time of purchase, some will even do it for a few weeks after initial purchase if they are interested in maximum customer satisfaction.

It may also depend on the individual mechanic you deal with. Mine is forever chopping $5 or $10 off purchase prices and giving me free nuts, bolts, fixings, reflectors, bells, etc.

The options are,

1) Go back to the LBS and ask. You never know.
2) Buy a new bar online and flog your old one on eBay or here on the forum.
