computer that does everything
Postby Premier » Thu Nov 12, 2009 10:21 pm
Hello!
I'm looking for a computer that does speed, cadence, heartrate all in the one unit, and also doesnt require you to cycle through the screens constantly to get that info.
Any ideas on ones to look for? Not too worried about downloading to the computer - never get the chance to analyse things after the ride anyway

I once bought a Union model from Torpedo7 for my daughter. It had wireless cadence.quite a large screen as you would expect. Her only complaint was that it seemed to randomly stop registering something. for example, the speed would drop out or the cadence would drop out or the HR would stop. Never got to the bottom of it because she was impatient and took it off before investigating why and whether it was an installation thing.

Look at a Sigma Rox 8 or 9
My display has Speed, HR, Cadence, Alt, and incline/decline displayed at once, as well as one more line for trip, time, avg speed etc that you can cycle through
Display can be customised as well out of 60+ functions if you can be bothered. Standard 2 settings (flats and hills) seem pretty comprehensive
Had no drop out problems on either my road bike or trainer bike so far

Yeah a Sigma Rox 8.0 will do it. Can get them pretty cheap on Ebay.

Have a look at the Cateye V3 - does all that you ask. About $400 in Oz and can be had for under $200 from the usual suspects in the UK.

Greetings Premier,
My Polar CS200 CAD does what you ask, displays Speed, Cadence as well as H/R at the same time.
It is wireless, and i have had some instances where there is some interferance and one of the readings stops, usually speed, but it comes back after a few seconds. not very often, but still annoying when it beeps to tell you it happens while i am riding. (maybe i should turn off the sound on the unit...). i think the batteries may be starting to get tired, a bit over two years of use, over 5000km, on two bikes.
Overall, no complaints. easy to read, easy to remove from bike, mounted on my stem. Has 7 ride memory, each new ride ovewrites the oldest ride. $350 retail, but i got mine off ebay, about $200 from memory.
I hope this helps.

Garmin Edge 305 or 705. Up to 8 measurements displayed on the screen. The units are expensive - you'll get them at least $100 cheaper buying over the Internet possibly from the US.
If there's a better 'bike computer' I haven't seen one. The Garmins aren't perfect - they have to go back to the factory to have the battery replaced (3-5 years.) They're just one of the best computers and training tools you can get. You can ride against 'yourself' - competing against your last ride over a given course with a graphic showing the previous and current bike positions.
Being GPS based, you can switch between bikes without changing the wheel size - wheel size is irrelevant to GPS based speed measurement. The mounts are crap but we learn to live with that. The inbuilt rechargeable battery lasts for a days riding when the unit is new. For touring we use an auxiliary battery.

I've now used both the Polar CS200cad (hint: now on ebay) as well as the Garmin Edge 705. They both essentially are fantastic, but are different.
The CS200 is small and simple and does it all without fuss. It does not have fancy GPS functions (aside from me, who gets lost whilst cycling?!). It is a great (better) heart rate monitor. It has a function that cycles through all the displays so you don't have to touch the buttons to see all the details. It is also very well priced with everything being wireless. For me, its downfall is that it only uploads data to a website and only stores 7 rides. My other issue with it is that its backlight does not stay on and will only come on when a button is pressed.
The Garmin Edge 705 is the bike computer on steroids - not doubt about that! Does everything at a cost. Some learning curve for non-Garmin peoples. And doesn't do anything perfectly (GPS navigation is almost as bad as the original eMap / HRM is basic - no % etc)

I have a polar s710i. However the latest polar models which do all you want are $$$
it does everything you ask.
Major cons are the software SUCKS downloading of data intermittently works and the actual software is just garbage, with altitude/cadence/HR/speed all mapped on one graph on a 2+ hr ride is just plain impossible to see anything. I am going to play with the software some more also try the polar pro trainer software see what it has to offer.
Other thing I would really like is to have the clock on the display as well. It has a function which allows speed/cadence/HR but I would like to swap to speed out for time now and then (which I can not do) I can only swap out cadence for time.
I have not had any issues with drop outs but Ill have to use it more to see about that. I have used the s710 as a HRM for 4+ years and only recently got into cycling ...

Cateye V3, has everything all up on the one screen. you can scroll for all readouts in maximums avereage and current.
Only issue is the small type size for all but speed and Heart rate, I have just gotten glasses for reading.
I see mavic have just released one that does speed and HRM and the skewer lever houses the battery and reader. i like the look of this one for my MTB when either my old specialised comp or 15yr old polar HRM finally Karks
