Are the Cateye lights (specifically looking at the HL-EL530) easy remove from the handlebar mount? I often have to park my bike outside, don't want some opportunist bagging themselves a free set of lights.
I'm considering eBay-ing for one of them, but would be handy knowing this before actually buying it.
Cateye lights: removable?

It's a good commuter light as long as you aren't going too fast. No battery packs or anything to deal with, very long battery life. I have mine mounted under the bars, with ay-ups over like this:
I'd grab a cheapo multi-led light as well though, as something additional to be seen by.

yeah, i'm just commuting, and inner melbourne at that, so no need for anything more traffic dazzling.
my thoughts were to use that as main constant light (like your Ay-Ups) and perhaps stick the cheapo white LED to the stem tube and use it on blinking for attention grabbing.
red blinky stays where it is as my main tail light, until i upgrade.

See if you can strap the blinky to your helmet Stryker, you can point it in the direction of anything risky, and the extra height puts it closer to eyeline for peds and cages.
