cell $49 wheelset

Postby ghettro » Wed Dec 09, 2009 1:43 am

I just ordered a pair, I figured it's no big loss if they are crap. Anyone else got these?

Would of, except I just order three different wheelsets from CRC at less then $80 a set with one high value item for free shipping last Thursday.

Note the CRC system was going nuts asking for $288 for shipping 4 wheelsets, when I should of got free shipping for spending $$$. Removed one wheelset and shipping was free. Didn't really need the 4th wheelset.

And definitely not another 8/9sp 700c right now.

someone i work with just got theirs in and so far he's surprised by how good they are for the price

i need a new wheelset as well, but cell isn't doing 26" wheelsets for $49 yet :(

hopefully either cell or mbc or someone else will do some more cheap wheels, btw, don't know how those guys do somethings so cheap without going broke, but good for us while they are still in business!

I assume they are 8/9 speed? Does anyone know what kind of hubs?

Not sure what hubs it has, but I'm assuming its shimano HG 8/9 speed compatible. I'll let you guys know as soon as I get mine

Just ordered some too - how long does cell take to deliver?

Just how bad can these be for $49?

I rang yesterday to get some more information. They said the sale was until they sold out, and the maximum tyre size it takes is 700x32, had intended ordering a set but they are gone now. No loss since they would be sitting around doing nothing.

I got mine today, they are fine for the money I reckon. 'Joytech' hubs with rubber seals, exposed cam skewers. Chunky looking spokes and 32 of them so with the 28.5mm deep rim they should be pretty resistant to potholes. The rims are 18.5mm wide. The bearings feel pretty rough, but I think they are just too tight. Overall the quality is like what you get on a cheap hybrid bike. One of my rims had a couple of little nicks in the edge.

Front 1117g with skewer
Rear 1377g with skewer though all these details are irrelevant now the wheels are unavailable.

Who else ordered some? What do you think?

Given these rocky/ceramic wheels cost $100 each, $49 for 2 at around 2kg is a bargain and can't possibly be criticised.

Grabbed a set for the trainer, but still waiting for them. When they showed up I was going to ask here if anyone had an opinion on those compared with the standard wheels (totally devoid of any markings whatsoever) on my 2008 CRX-4. I figured there probably wouldn't be any noticable difference...

Cheers,
Simon.

Still waiting on mine, do you know what compatibility the rear hub has yet?

Bah, called them up today and I missed out but they didn't tell me. Anyway, not too bad as they didn't charge my CC either.

Also the weight is a theft deterrent, no theif would want to risk the back injury trying to make off with them.

I find the problem with cheap hubs is they are too difficult to get the correct tension on the bearings. They are either too tight or too loose. The cups also may not be perfectly square with the axle and so even when you do finally get them almost correct, there are still either tighter spots or looser spots.

Cell's customer service online is very ordinary at best.
I dealt with them once, and that was the first and last time.

I dealt with them recently and I think it will also be the last time.

I don't know what you guys are talking about... i had a call this afternoon apologising as they didn't have any wheels to send, and asking if i wanted to pay another $50 for some shimanos. I was quite happy with that, but couldn't get onto them again to finalise the order of the others

Then i got home, and found a box from cell with two wheels... two FRONT wheels.

Hmmm. Slightly amusing, but quite annoying. Wanted to put the bike together now too

"Bugger." Just got a call from Cell. Apparently they advertised the special based on a number of these wheels making it on to a container, but they didn't make it to Oz. They're expecting stock to land mid-Jan now.

Given the price, I've decided to keep the order open for now...

Cheers,
Simon.

I just spoke to them too, and the guy seems reasonable. He was pretty embarrassed, and asked if i could wait until after christmas to sort it out.

I don't mind, but will be interested to see how the next stage goes. They look decent for $50 so i would like to get a back one

How is everyone going with these?

Cell haven't been particularly helpful, which is a shame as the bike should be otherwise ready soon. I just can't comprehend how stupid the person who packed the box must have been - it doesn't look good, or inspire confidence in the company

It is a shame, as otherwise they look worth $50. I can't see myself ever getting a back one though... Anyone got anything or suggestions for a basic, similar wheel?
