Questions about purchasing bicycles and parts

The Glide looks like a great place to start out as long as the fit is good.

All the maintenance advice you'll ever need can be found in the Shed. What the membership doesn't collectively know can be counted on the fingers of one elbow. For everything else, there's Sheldon Brown.

Hello again,

Just to throw some more options into the mix, a friend of mine who works in a LBS in Hobart can do me some good deals on the two following bikes, sub $500.

Avanti Blade http://www.avantibikes.com/fitness/blade.aspx?bid=261

Avanti Blade 1.0 http://www.avantibikes.com/fitness/blade1.aspx?bid=262

Although I have decided I can spend $500 on a bike, and if my mate can swing me a good deal and maybe even get the Blade 2.0 for my $500, would it be worth it? Avanti Blade 2.0 http://www.avantibikes.com/fitness/blade2.aspx?bid=263.

Sorry for being a PITA!!

Cheers, Greg.

Me again!

I sent an email inquiry to one of the LBS's and they have offered me this Malvern Star for $439.

The decisions are getting harder and harder!

Cheers, Greg.

Hey Greg hurry up and buy something and put us all out of your misery I mean half the members here spend more on a saddle (did I mention Brooks) than you are on a bike.

I think the Malvern Star looks the best so far...buy it and get riding, you won't lose any weight posting on here. :P

Malvern Star Pursuit vs Avanti Blade 1.0 or 2.0 (I can't really see the diff between them) it is all swings and roundabouts. The Malvern Star has better drivetrain the Avanti the better frame and forks (chrome moly vs hi tensile), etc.

I would suggest you go take each one for a ride and choose the one you like the best. No wrong or right decision, they are similar, but not the same, it is just find the one that works for you.

I'll go and have a look at both on Friday. I'm a bit laid up with a 24 hour gastro bug ATM, back to work tomorrow. I'm pretty sure I lost a kilo or two through nature doing it's thing! :(

Thanks for the advice!

Cheers, Greg.

P.S. I come from a background of turbo charged Nissans, spending money isn't the issue, spending money WISELY is the issue! If in doubt, ask those who know!

Bloke at work rides a Blade and loves it. Me I shudder at the way he single cable locks it to a flimsy fence in the open and just walks away leaving all the bits still there. Been doing this for near 2 years now..
Another bloke Ron runs a hybrid Avanti and is happy with it, I've taken it out for a blat. Not too shabby at all.

Faced with the choice of a good frame with average bits or an average frame with good bits, I'd go for the good frame, bits wear out and need replacing sooner or......sooner 8)

A test ride of ~40 minutes should tell you which bike makes your bum and soul happier.

Well, you'll all be happy to hear that I have purchased an 2010 Avanti Blade 1.0 today. Will ride it to the physio tomorrow to see how it goes on the road, and to see how the saddle height etc are set.

Will post up a pic of it tomorrow. And thanks to all for your invaluable advice. I would have got a hybrid or MTB, which wouldn't have been overly suitable for my needs.

Cheers, Greg.

Excellent choice - Avanti are great bikes, with very good Oz support.

Yeah, got the bike and a decent combo bike lock (with a clip to keep it on your bike when rolled up) for $499, with a free 6 week check up to make sure it's all running true and fine. As it turns out, my mate assembled the bike last week, so if it goes pear shaped, I can blame him!

Also ended up with the large frame, instead of the medium frame he thought I needed. Went from the M to the L and the difference in length was enough to justify the better fit. There, I said it!! I was FITTED for my bike!! :D And going for a ride in the morning with the family, then riding to physio. About a 10-12k ride from memory.

That's the last thing I have from my RB20DET powered R31 Skyline wagon I used to have, was on the kids toy pedal car until they broke it, so it's going to get mounted on the wall of the shed, maybe turn it into a clock or something.
