Any Specialized Tarmac pilots about?

Postby HAKS » Thu Jan 07, 2010 3:51 pm

In the market for a new roadie and a 2009 Specialized Tarmac Expert Double has taken my fancy for ~$3500. I really wanted something with the new Ultegra 6700 so am considering purchasing this, getting a 6700 groupset from the UK (~$900) and then selling off the Ultegra SL as a 2nd hand groupset. Assuming I can sell the SL for a few hundred the final price would come in around $4k.

Just wondering if there are any Tarmac pilots about and your thoughts on the bike?

I know there are plenty of other 2010 bikes with 6700 in the $4k range but considering the 09 Tarmac RRP was around $6k I'm wondering if this would result in a higher end frame for the same $. The standard weight for the bike with SL is around 7.6kg which is quite tempting and would drop a bit with 6700.

G'day HAKS

Purchased 2010 Tarmac Elite 2 months ago which has the same frame as the 2009 Expert (FACT 8r) but with Shimano 105. I've upgraded group set to Ultegra with a view to selling the 105. Also replaced wheels because the standard wheelset on the Elite was less than average (Mavic CXP-22).

As you would expect the frame is very stiff but is very agressive due it being Specialized's "racing" design. Fantastic acceleration and pretty light. No sure what the wheels are with the 2009 but have found considerable improvement from upgrading the wheel set.

Just as an indication, the RRP on the 2009 Expert was about $6k but is $5,200 for the 2010 expert with an upgraded frame to FACT 10r. But I have had no issues with the 8r frame.

Good luck.

Thanks for your reply Andy,

Yeah i looked at the 2010 Expert but thought what was offered for $5200 was a little bit steap ie. average wheels, (plus i don't have $5200 :P)

The 2009 had Ultegra SL wheels but I've got a set of Fulcrums which are prob on par with the Ultegra so would likely use them.

I'd be interested in the Ultegra SL wheels if you want to move them on...

I have a 2008 Tarmac Expert, Ultegra SL and Fulcrum 5. I love it. It rides nice and it does everything that I want. I have not been able to fault this bike at all and I have done 1600km on her now.

All it needs is a decent engine.

I dont know that I would bother upgrading the group set however, I cannot fault mine at all. Shifting is crisp, braking is almost too easy.

cheers
Glenn

Why would you want to change out Ultegra Sl for Ultergra 6700??? i have used both and there is not that much difference IMHO. Spend the money you would have spent on new gruppo stuff on a better set of wheels as it iwll have a much bigger effect (eg. with the money you have saved put it towards some Fulcrum 1 wheels or similar).

Thanks for the input

re: groupset - had my heart set of 6700 since it was announced in April 09 and been waiting for the 2010 bikes ever since. More so just an option to get the said bike to fit the mould of what I was looking for should the test ride go well and it be what i want. Am also a fan of some of the new 6700 features over SL but do admit its more a cosmetic change then anything else.

Get better wheels then. A good set of wheels can save a fair bit of weight. I have used the Ultegra wheels now for 4000km and they have been faultless and i think are excellent training wheels and for group rides.

Haks

I have a 2008 Tarmac Elite. I love my bike.

Even though it is the more race geometry I find it very comfortable.

I would change the saddle ASAP and upgrade your wheels and enjoy a supurb ride.

Cheers for the comments. Tried a few other bikes out today and got some exceptional service form a few stores which is now steering me away from the Specialized. Waiting for a few more models to come in next week for a test ride then will make a decision. The Giant TCR1 took the cake today. Had been avoiding it as not the biggest fan of its look but man it rode well.
