New Bike and question about trye pressure vs weight

Postby auswi » Fri Jan 15, 2010 6:48 pm

Hello,

I decided to ditch the layby for the Avanti Sprint that I was going to pick up and settled for a Scott Speedster S40. I took it out for a quick spin this arvo and it feels nice and comefortable (Got to get used to the drop bars).

I decided to spend a bit more and get the Scott due to the Tiagra rear derailer and Sora front shifters.

What are your thoughts on my 1st road bike. (I know it is not the best components but should be a good start)

Also the guy at the Local Bike Shop told me not to run 110psi as there is more chance of punctures and 100psi is better. As I am 94kg is there a particular tyre pressure I should run and does a lower pressure reduce punctures.

By the way my experience at the LBS (99bikes.com.au) was very good and great service.

Cheers

Auswi

The Michelin Bike Tyre web page has a graph of size/weight/pressure.

Really depends on your weight as well. If I don't run 110psi at the rear, my pinch flat risk increases greatly. I run 100psi at the front and 110psi at the rear with conti GP4000s.

I run 100 all round and I've smashed through pot holes, not a single pinch flat :D.
Then again you have 10 kg on me.

LBS is likely to have recommended 110 psi over 100 psi based upon your weight in order to keep the tyre wall flex within optimal tollerances.

My tyres (Michelin Pro 3 Race) can go to 120 psi, I began at 110 psi both front and rear and now have settled on 100psi for the front and 110psi for the rear but I'm lighter than you at 77kg. These pressures are where I have subjectively determined that I get 1) best rolling performance 2) plenty of grip onthe front end and 3) the most comfortable ride over the particular road surfaces I ride over.
3rd class cycling is always better than 1st class walking
