Replacing Mavic Kyrisum Equipe Wheelset

Postby Aushiker » Sat Feb 13, 2010 6:01 pm

Hi

Another wheelset thread I am afraid. My rear Mavic Kyrisum Equipe which has done around 11,500 km has developed hairline fractures so is on the way out. As a baseline, the Equipes are 1770 grams 18/20 spoke count. I would like to go up in the spoke count whilst keeping the weight lower :)

Exploring Wiggle (using Wiggle prices for comparison purposes) and PBK my options seem to be:

Easton EA70 24/28 spoke count 1650 grams $498.50
Fulcrum R5 24/27 spoke count 1760 grams $327.58 (basically the weight would be a direct replacement for the existing wheels)
Easton EA90SL 24/28 spoke count 1530 grams $712.17

My thinking is (a) along the lines of the Easton EA 70 or Fulcrum R5 for another 10 - 11,000 km or (b) go for the Easton EA90SL or look into a TWE build. Anyone have any ideas on TWE pricing? Experience with the Easton wheels?

Other suggestions (not ProLite)?

Thanks
Andrew

Hi Andrew

My TWE wheels cost me including delivery $940, the wheels I'm attemping to build have cost me about $500 so far. Almost got the front one done now....

The wheels at chain reaction seem to the best prices around. There are regular group buys to qualify for free shipping.

Don't trust the Fulcrum R5 weights, mine came in heavier then what they state. Not sure if the ones you are looking at are the 2010 model though, i have the 2009s. Can't recall exact figures but will weigh them tomorrow and check.

Your mileage may vary but the two guys I ride with who bought EA90s havent had a happy time - both broke spokes, one had the tool free cone adjustment coming loose all the time and the other had stuffed bearings after 2000kms.

In the factory built wheels I would go the Fulcrum 3 over the 5. Consider also the Shimano 7850 C24 which goes well and is hotly priced at the moment.

In customs built how about a set of DT1.1, Chris King Classic Road hubs and DT comp spokes. could source and build those for less than $1k.

Hi

I excluded the Fulcrum 3 because of the spoke count. Shimano 7850 have a similar issue for me I think. Thanks for the heads-up on the EA90s too.

Models being considered are the 2010 models.

Hi Andrew

You are more than welcome to hop on my Masi anytime and give my TWE's a whirl. Just give me a heads up so I can change my wheels across back to them.

For the record my 2009 Fulcrum R5s weigh;

Front: Fulcrum say - 776g, I say 820g
Rear: Fulcrum say - 980g, I say 1050g

My weight exclude skewers. So 1.726Kg vs 2.03Kg

I never used any of the suggested wheels before so I can't really comment but I have always liked Mavics. Especially kysrium elites. Had mine for ages now....... Actually, I think I have had them for about 20 months and about 40,000km of riding with no issues. That seems a little odd, better check the numbers again.

Fulcrum 3 and above use alloy spokes and I don't think you need nor want that for a non-racing wheelset when there's weight concern. Fulcrum 5 would be the go.

Otherwise wheelset spec weight can never be trusted with most brands. It's but an indicative weight that's influenced by production variations.

I don't want to purchase ProLites; I don't like the look of them and they just don't appeal to me which is my choice, hence didn't see the point in them being suggested. For the same reason I specified my preferences for lighter weight and higher spoke counts, i.e., to hopefully get feedback on appropriate choices.

Just as based on the feedback given I have gone off the idea of Easton rims as well and will probably go Fulcrum and/or TWE.

Thanks for the feedback so far.

Sorry to hijack Andrew - what effect does spoke count have ?

I'm following this thread with interest as I'm considering a new wheelset myself.

Hi Andrew,

Another possible brand to consider is Token C30A

C30A 30mm Clincher Alloy W/Set - Shimano
· 30mm profile, 700C Alloy Rims
· Alloy Hubs 20H/F, 24H/R, Sealed Bearings
· Pillar Stainless Steel Spokes & Nipples
· Shimano
· Weight:1660g/set (735+925g)

or they now do a "superlight" version which is 1620g/set.

I have the Tiramic bearing upgrade and have done 3153 km on mine with no issues other than getting all the spokes nipped up once...I put this down to settling in ?

Cheers
Dave.

Thanks Sogood. You have pretty much sold me on set of Fulcrums. That said I am getting pretty keen on a set of TWE wheels for the longer term so may get a set of Fulcrum 7 now as a short term solution and a set of TWE rims in the third quarter.

BTW I dropped in to a certain bike shop in the Port City as a I was passing and they had Mavic Kyrisum Equipes marked at $999.95. Same wheelset, well 2010 wheelset at CRC sells for $455.05.

Hi

As I understand it, strength and support for greater weight. However, as Sogood has alluded to, spoke material also comes into play.

I have ridden 300km on a 32 spoke wheel with a broken spoke (I broke the spoke on the way to the ride ). I doubt you could do the same with a 16 spoke wheel.

With any wheelset, spoke quality and wheel build are very important. You can have the best rims and the best spokes but if the wheel is not built properly (under-tensioned or over-tensioned spokes or uneven tension - some looser and some tighter) the likelihood of breaking spokes increases dramatically.

Hi Andrew,

I have no idea who would stock them in WA...Jet Black Products is the importer, probably worth sending them an email for local stockist and price info:

p:+ 61 2 4560 1200
f:+ 61 2 4577 7500
e:info@jetblackproducts.com
w:www.jetblackproducts.com

Cheers
Dave.

PS: Bums on Bikes website ( local to me ) lists Kyrisum Equipe for $499.00 plus shipping

I know that some people are happy with these wheels, but the reports above put me off. For the same reason I wouldn't touch RS10's. Some are happy, some are not.
For this price range I would buy an Ultegra wheelset from CRC either
Ultegra 6600 for $306.45 AUD or
Ultegra 6700 for $383.04 AUD

Have you considered Campagnolo Neutron Wheels?
They are a very strong and great climbing wheels i think you can get a set now for Neutrons for about $500 or Neutron Ultras (Carbon Hubs) for around $900.
Absolutely swear by them!

The pricing equation b/n LBS and mail order is a no-brainer on wheels. Even if $455 goes to trash on the first ride, there's still change to buy a second set and still come out on top.

Good luck with your buy and hope you'll like those wheels.

It depends - I was very happy on a set of Fulcrum 1s (14 front and 21 rear) but they are pretty solid spokes and excellent hubs. Can still be had for under $1k on the internet. There is quite a difference between the F1/F3 and the lower end of the range.

However you get what you pay for mostly.

I would say that if it is a set for just putting on reliable miles then at the current exchange rate you could get Chris King hubs, DT1.1 and DT comp spokes in a 28(2x)/32(3x) built for around $1k and they will last ages.

Hi

Thanks for your suggestion, but for that money I think I will go with TWE wheels based on the feedback received here and in the other thread on TWE wheels and as I indicated to Sogood that is the likely path I will now take in the 3rd quarter of the year (i.e., when I can afford it). In the meantime I will probably get Fulcrum 7 or 5 to get me out of trouble now.

Also with TWE wheels it is a known builder (now nothing of builders here in WA), seems to offer a pretty damn good product and after sales service. Already the limited contact I have had with Greg has been good.
