Questions about purchasing bicycles and parts

Not sure if this is the right section for this post but here goes...
Just wanted to introduce myself to the list and pass on thanks for a useful resource.
Bit about myself. I'm mid 40's, a recent ex-smoker who wanted to get back onto a roadie primarily for commuting & fitness. Been a lurker for quite a while but finally subscribed. The level of knowledge on this group and the level of info freely shared is pretty amazing. Helped me in working out what I wanted.
Bought myself an '06 Gitane Mach 1600 beginning of the week as it fitted the bill and rang all the right bells for me. Still got the ear to ear grin on my dial.
To the admins and moderators particularly, thanks guys.
I'd like to say "G'day Grog", but I think I've been that a little too often lately ....
Welcome to the nut-house.
Think outside the double triangle.
Imagine a world with no hypothetical scenarios.
G'Day Greg, welcome outside
Great to hear you're loving your time in the wind.
Just remember, when you post pics of the new pride and joy, the shed door must be cream, Admins' Decree.
...whatever the road rules, self-preservation is the absolute priority for a cyclist when mixing it with motorised traffic.

Aww shucks. That makes it so hard to be rude to you
Welcome to the nuthouse. Now that you're a member, you can mislead innocents like we obviously did with you
I had a good bike ... so I fixed it
As I said, been lurking long enough to wise up to some of the characters here
hence the cunning approach of my intro.
Finally got a few short rides in (weather hasn't been brilliant here lately) crikey, I'm out of condition!
Incidently haven't regretted picking this bike one bit.
And thanks for the welcome. - Greg
Been a few weeks but I finally got off my arse and got an image uploaded. Not the best quality or setting but here it is:
As can be seen it's an 06 Gitane Mach1600 (I don't think I've seen a logo that big on any other make)
Tiagra 9 speed with double chainring
Shimano R500 wheels
Only upcoming change will be:
fitment of some SPD pedals (sorry sogood, going to try the Shimano instead of the CBs at this stage)
and do my best to wear it out - Grog
Congrats! Purty looking bike.
I am sure the SPDs will serve you well (based on the law of average). It's funny how personal experiences can dramatically influence one's view and the purpose of expressing one's views on these forums is to just widen the considerations of others. A wise choice is a considered choice.
Bianchi, Ridley, Montague, GT, Garmin and All things Apple
Nice looker shiny !
Likely just the shadow on the wall. Same rims as my bike so that's my guess !
Nothing trick there Richard though well spotted. Standard Shimano R500 wheelset. Just the shadowing as gsxrboy noted correctly.
Told you it was a pretty dodgy shot. Was taken the night I got it home and looked at it. and looked at it. and.....
Just out of curiosity has anyone ever done a breakdown of brands on the list?
I know there's a lot of hybridising but was sort of curious who else doesn't own a Giant
